Microsoft Ignite 2024 announcements: Windows 365 Link, Copilot Actions, and personalized AI chips, among other things

Microsoft revealed updates to Copilot, Windows, Microsoft 365, Azure, Teams, and other products at its annual Ignite conference for developers and IT professionals.

With CEO Satya Nadella showcasing the software giant’s new and upgraded enterprise solutions for its large business clients, Microsoft Ignite 2024, which took place in Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday, November 19, we had a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence.

“Copilot, Copilot devices, and Copilot & AI stack are the three platforms we are developing,” he stated. “AI will do for knowledge work what lean did for manufacturing. It all comes down to adding value and cutting waste,” Nadella stated.

These are all of Microsoft Ignite 2024’s key announcements.

Copilot Actions

Microsoft announced a new AI agent feature at Tuesday’s event called Copilot Actions, which enables users of Microsoft 365 Copilot to automate repetitive tasks like filing weekly reports, summarizing actions taken in Teams meetings, and more.

According to a blog post, users can instruct AI agents to perform back-office tasks and leave them to do so without prompting them, as these agents “can operate around the clock to review and approve customer returns or go over shipping invoices to help businesses avoid costly supply-chain errors.”

Additionally, the business revealed that it will be integrating AI agents into SharePoint, its document management system. It also disclosed that AI will enable PowerPoint users to convert whole presentations into several languages.

Team Interpreter

Speaking of AI-powered translation, Microsoft said that Teams meeting attendees would have the option to speak or listen in the language of their choice. Teams’ interpretation tool uses real-time, AI-powered speech-to-speech translation to mimic a participant’s voice in a different language.

Up to nine languages will be supported by the interpretation tool, which will be made available for preview in early 2025.

Places on Microsoft

Microsoft has released a new software called Places that helps users notify their coworkers of the days they will be entering the office by using artificial intelligence and a location-based strategy. The Verge reported that the app is anticipated to be linked with Copilot shortly.

Personalized AI chips

Microsoft claimed to have created two in-house silicon chips that will improve data security and accelerate AI applications. Microsoft’s data centers will house the extra AI infrastructure.

The software behemoth may be able to lessen its reliance on processors like Nvidia and Intel by creating AI chips that are tailored to its requirements.

The company’s attempts to create custom chips are intended to “optimize every layer of infrastructure” so that its data centers can handle data at the pace needed for Microsoft’s AI applications, according to Rani Borkar, corporate vice president, of Azure Hardware Systems and Infrastructure.

According to a Reuters article, starting in 2025, a new security chip known as Azure Integrated HSM would be put in each server at a data center operated by Microsoft. The business also unveiled a new cooling technology that employs liquid to lower the temperature of adjacent server components in data centers, enabling the deployment of large-scale AI systems.

Link for Windows 365

Windows 365 Link, a new little PC gadget from Microsoft, allows users to safely connect to Windows 365 in a matter of seconds. It can be used to stream a version of Windows 11 on any device and costs $349.

“Windows 365 Link is the perfect solution for IT professionals looking to increase productivity for desk-based workers in their organization because it combines cloud-powered performance and local processing,” the firm stated in a blog post.

A small, fanless, and user-friendly gadget called Windows 365 Link can convert local monitors into Windows 365 online PCs.

Additionally, the company wants to apply AI to enhance Windows search on Copilot Plus PCs. This update would make it easier for users to describe papers, images, and other assets in order to search for them. Early next year is when it is anticipated to launch.

Furthermore, Microsoft and Meta are collaborating to enhance Windows users’ virtual reality (VR) experience on the social media behemoth’s Quest 3 and Quest 3S. According to Microsoft, Windows 11 will be accessible on mixed-reality headsets starting in December.

The Windows Resiliency Initiative

Since the CrowdStrike event in July of this year, which brought down over 8.5 million Windows PCs and servers, Microsoft has been striving to increase the security of its products and services. The large tech corporation has responded by announcing a new plan called the Windows Resiliency Initiative, which calls for fundamental operating software modifications to make it easier for users to recover their Windows IT systems.

According to Microsoft’s blog post, the recently launched security project will concentrate on the following areas:

  • Reliability should be strengthened in light of the lessons learned from the July incident.
  • More users and programs can now operate without administrator rights.
  • tighter restrictions on which drivers and apps can be used.
  • Enhanced identity security to stop phishing scams.

The Windows outage lasted as long as it did, in part because manually booting each system that broke during the outage was a known remedy for the “blue screen of death. ” A new tool from Microsoft called Quick Machine Recovery “will enable IT administrators to execute targeted fixes from Windows Update on PCs, even when machines are unable to boot, without needing physical access to the PC,” according to the company.

“This remote recovery will enable your employees to resolve broad issues at a significantly faster rate than previously possible,” it continued. According to the business, people who are enrolled in the Windows Insider program will be able to preview it starting in early 2025.

Next year, Microsoft will also host Zero Day Quest, an invite-only hacking event that will take place in person. “With an additional $4 million in potential awards for research into high-impact areas, specifically cloud, and AI, this new hacking event will be the largest of its kind,” stated Tom Gallagher, VP of engineering at Microsoft’s security response center.
