MediaTek, a prominent Taiwanese chip designer, is developing an Arm-based processor for Windows PCs.
According to a Reuters report, this new chip aims to rival Apple’s established Arm-based CPUs and challenge Intel’s long-held dominance in the PC market. Scheduled for release in late 2025, the MediaTek processor is designed to run artificial intelligence applications, aligning with Microsoft’s vision for the future of consumer computing. Apple, which has been releasing its Arm-based CPUs for Mac computers for about four years, is the target of the software company’s intentions. Furthermore, Intel’s established supremacy in the PC industry may be threatened by Microsoft’s intention to optimize Windows for Arm.
Microsoft’s approval of MediaTek’s PC chip for the Copilot+ Windows software was not immediately apparent.
According to Arm executives, one of their clients constructed a chip using the pre-made parts in about nine months for a finished design—MediaTek’s isn’t. Depending on their complexity, sophisticated semiconductors usually take seasoned chip design companies more than a year to build and test.

Qualcomm was chosen by Microsoft in 2016 to lead the effort to switch Windows to the Arm processing architecture, which has long-powered smartphones and their tiny batteries. According to Reuters last year, Microsoft gave Qualcomm exclusive rights to build Arm-based Windows-compatible chips through 2024.
Other designers have chosen to create chips to support Microsoft’s most recent attempt to employ Arm designs because the exclusivity agreement between Qualcomm and Microsoft is about to expire. Windows computers have been using Advanced Micro Devices and Intel processor architectures for decades.
AMD and Nvidia are developing Arm designs for Windows computers. A person familiar with the situation claims that MediaTek is helping Nvidia with its PC chip project. According to two of the people, MediaTek’s endeavor to develop a PC processor is distinct from its partnership with Nvidia.
