The one-year chronology of OpenAI ChatGPT is no less than the saga which has stormed New Age Technology. ChatGPT is an AI language model developed by OpenAI, based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture. It’s designed to generate human-like text based on the input it receives. According to Reuters and Fortune ChatGPT has 180.5 million users, generates $80 million/month revenue and crossed over 10 billion all-time visits (1.43B visits in August 2023 itself).  

Interestingly the OpenAI ChatGPT userbase grew by an explosive 9,900% to reach 100M users in just 60 days of launch and the hype doesn’t seem to be fading due to its significant advancement in the field of natural language processing and a wide range of potential applications in various industries and sectors.

  • ChatGPT has 180.5 million users, generates $80 million/month in revenue, and crosses over 10 billion all-time visits (1.43B visits in August 2023 itself). 
  • Most users are male (65.68%), with the majority from the USA (46.75%), and then India (5.47%).
  • ChatGPT offers a free version with GPT-3.5 and a $20/month Plus version with GPT-4, which is 40% more accurate and 82% safer.

How Many ChatGPT Users Are There? 180 million people have signed up 

Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI, said that ChatGPT has more than 100 million people using it every week. He shared this news at OpenAI’s first big meeting for developers in San Francisco. ChatGPT got to 100 million users in just two months, and more people keep using it. To understand how fast this is, Facebook took four and a half years to get the same number of users. Before the app called “Instagram Threads” came out, ChatGPT was the quickest to reach 100 million users.

“Instagram Threads” got to 100 million users in just two days, faster than ChatGPT’s two months. But, while fewer people are using Threads now, ChatGPT’s popularity is still growing a lot.

Over 180 million people have created a ChatGPT account to date, but only around 100 million of them actively use it. ChatGPT took just 2 months for to reach the 100 million mark, and it is still going strong with the count. 

ChatGPT was the fastest app to reach 100 million users before the launch of “Instagram Threads.” The usage of Threads has rapidly decreased while ChatGPT’s usage has skyrocketed. Facebook took four and a half years to reach the same mark.

  3. More than 92% of Fortune 500 companies are using ChatGPT.
  4. 59.67% of ChatGPT users are males, and 40.33% are females.
  5. ChatGPT is forecasted to generate a revenue of $200 million by the end of 2023.
  6. OpenAI spends $700,000 every day to run ChatGPT.
  7. ChatGPT has surpassed 10 billion all-time page visits. It gets over 1 billion page visits every month on average.
  8. Over 88% of the traffic on ChatGPT is direct traffic. At the same time, 4.22% of the traffic is directed from social media platforms. 
  9. 7 nations, including China and Russia, cannot access ChatGPT. 
  10. 53% of the readers failed to identify ChatGPT written content as AI-written.
