Some school districts blocked access to ChatGPT after it was introduced, raising concerns about the generative AI tool’s potential to impair children’s education and IQ. But soon after, a lot of institutions decided to open the technology and start using it in the classroom. This new course aims to maximize ChatPGT’s potential for teachers.
OpenAI and Wharton Online announced a new course on Thursday called AI in Education: Leveraging ChatGPT for Teaching. The course is free to take on Coursera. Its goal is to enable high school and college teachers to better integrate generative AI into their teaching by teaching them the fundamentals of the technology.
The four modules of the self-paced course take around an hour to finish. Among the subjects addressed in the modules is the application of AI in the classroom. Build AI exercises and tests, provoke AI, develop GPTs, and educate yourself on the dangers of the technology.

Eric Hamberger, managing director of Wharton Online, stated, “Wharton Online has a strong commitment to providing easily accessible content from the AI experts here at Wharton that can empower educators to harness this transformative technology and enrich the teaching experience for everyone.”
Experts in the subject are included in the course, such as Ethan Mollick, a professor at Wharton who was among the first to figure out how to use generative AI in the classroom and curriculum to encourage learning. Mollick was listed by Time magazine as one of the most significant figures in AI in 2024. The course is also led by Lilach Mollick, co-director of Wharton Generative AI Labs.
Users can demonstrate their understanding of AI by sharing their Wharton Online and OpenAI certificates, which are granted by Coursera, with their networks after completing the course. Enrollment in the course, which is available on Coursera, is free and opens on November 21.
