Microsoft Loses to Google in Windows Revenue, Says Satya Nadella

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella claims Google's Windows generates more revenue than Microsoft's due to its openness and interoperability. Google dominates search and ad streams, with 66% of desktop browser sessions on Chrome and 85% of searches conducted through Google.

Google’s Windows operating system generates more revenue than Microsoft’s, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Nadella alluded to Windows’ openness and interoperability in a recent video interview with BG2Pod, pointing out that rival AI tools such as Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Anthropic’s Claude are all usable on the operating system.

Stated differently, Windows users are not obligated to utilize Microsoft’s Copilot suite.

Windows is responsible for some of Google’s revenue.

However, Google does not profit from Microsoft’s operating system sales. Rather, the company has secured several revenue streams thanks to its widespread presence on the platform and many PCs in general.

The majority of Windows users support Google in multiple ways because of the company’s dominance of the search business and associated ad streams.

According to Statcounter, two out of three (66%) desktop browser sessions on all platforms are on Chrome. Chrome’s supremacy is further demonstrated when you subtract Safari’s 9% market share and some Mac devices.

85% of all searches are conducted through Google, making it a clear favorite even when consumers opt to use a different browser. Just 3% of the market is occupied by Microsoft’s Bing. According to an independent analysis from Cloudflare’s Year in Review report, Google’s market share is more like 88%.

Given that his company is currently under regulatory examination for engaging in anticompetitive business practices, it is impossible to overlook how timely Nadella’s remarks are. Even Google has attempted to break off its partnership with OpenAI, the startup that created ChatGPT and has gotten billions of dollars in Redmond funding.

Google is not exempt from similar accusations, either, and authorities have taken note of its agreement with Apple to make Safari’s default search engine. According to Windows Central, it paid Apple $26 billion in 2021 alone to maintain that position.
