While Congress continues to battle with regulating the technology, the Biden administration said on Wednesday that it aims to hold a global safety summit on artificial intelligence.
The International Network of AI Safety Institutes will hold its inaugural meeting in San Francisco on November 20–21, hosted by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. The purpose of the meeting is to “advance global cooperation toward the safe, secure, and trustworthy development of artificial intelligence.”
Australia, Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Singapore, and the European Union are among the members of the network.

Both excitement and anxiety have been sparked by generative AI, which can produce text, images, and videos in answer to open-ended questions. It has the potential to overtake humans and have disastrous consequences, as well as to render some jobs obsolete and sway elections.
During the AI Seoul Summit in May, when countries resolved to give AI safety, innovation, and inclusivity top priority, Raimondo announced the establishment of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes. Before the AI Action Summit in Paris in February, the San Francisco meeting aims to kickstart technical collaboration.
The goal, according to Raimondo, is “close, thoughtful coordination with our allies and like-minded partners.”
“We want the rules of the road on AI to be underpinned by safety, security, and trust,” she stated.

To discuss priority work topics and improve international collaboration and information exchange on AI safety, technical specialists from each member’s AI safety institution, or comparable government-backed scientific agency, will be present at the San Francisco meeting.
To make sure the technologies are secure and resistant to cyberattacks, the Commerce Department announced last week that it was planning to impose comprehensive reporting requirements on cloud computing providers and developers of sophisticated AI.
The quest for regulations coincides with a pause in AI-related legislative activity in Congress.
In October 2023, President Joe Biden signed an executive order mandating that AI system creators who create dangers to the national security, economics, public health, or safety of the United States disclose safety test results with the government before public release.
