What is YouTube Mandatory Disclosure Feature for AI-Generated Content?

YouTube launched the labeling feature for creators, making labeling AI-generated videos mandatory. This move lets users distinguish between real and synthetic content, thus building trust and transparency for content.

YouTube has unveiled a new tool known as labeling for the creators in the creator’s studio, wherein they will be required to disclose if the content they are posting is artificial intelligence generated or realistic in nature.

To address the issue of transparency and build trust, YouTube is making it mandatory for creators to let their audience know if the content is being generated using synthetic media or is real and authentic to them.

YouTube said in its announcement statement, “Viewers increasingly want more transparency about whether the content they’re seeing is altered or synthetic.” Read here the official statement on: Click Here

  • Using the likeness of a realistic person: Digitally altering content to replace the face of one individual with another’s or synthetically generating a person’s voice to narrate a video.
  • Altering footage of real events or places: Such as making it appear as if a real building caught fire, or altering a real cityscape to make it appear different in reality.
  • Generating realistic scenes: Showing a realistic depiction of fictional major events, like a tornado moving toward a real town.

Which Content Do Not Need YouTube Disclosure?

  • When artificial intelligence is used for productivity purposes such as content ideas, generating scripts, or generating automatic captions in videos

YouTube will first launch the labeling feature in the next week for the YouTube mobile app followed by other platforms like desktop and TV. YouTube users will be given considerable time to adjust to the new process.

If the creator still fails to label their content YouTube might take stringent actions against them like removal of videos or even closing down their YouTube channels. In some cases, if the content has the power to mislead people, YouTube reserves the right to label it even if the creator has not mentioned it.

As the elections are around the corner for most of the world including India and Europe, Deepfake or manipulated content for campaigns could befool people around the world. YouTube’s new feature will definitely put the synthetically generated content on hold giving a clear picture to the audience.

Big techs and social platforms like Meta’s Facebook, and Google Gemini might also put some regulatory measures on their content ahead of elections.
