Elon Musk's brain-chip startup Neuralink live-streamed on Wednesday its first patient implanted with a chip playing online chess. Check here Noland Arbaugh, the 29-year-old patient who was paralyzed was playing chess on his laptop and moving the cursor using the Neuralink device.

In a significant development, Elon Musk’s Neuralink has successfully enabled a paralyzed patient to play online chess using a brain-chip implant.
The patient, 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh, who suffered paralysis below the shoulders due to a diving accident, demonstrated the ability to control a computer cursor with his thoughts alone.
The live-streamed event showcased Arbaugh playing chess on his laptop with the Neuralink device implanted in January.
The Elon Musk Neuralink technology aims to empower individuals with paralysis to operate computers and potentially regain their independence from physical disability.
Arbaugh’s experience with the Neuralink implant has been transformative. “The surgery was super easy,” he shared, adding that he was discharged from the hospital the following day without cognitive impairments.

The device has allowed him to resume playing Civilization VI, a game he had given up on, for an uninterrupted eight hours.
While praising Neuralink as a groundbreaking technology, Arbaugh acknowledges that this is not flawless and requires further refinement, he emphasizes its life-changing impact.
“I don’t want people to think this is the end of the journey,” he said. “There’s still a lot of work to be done, but it has already changed my life.”
Experts like Kip Ludwig, a former neural engineering program director at the US National Institutes of Health, caution that Neuralink’s achievement is not a scientific breakthrough but an incremental advancement.

Ludwig notes that the early days post-implantation involve significant learning for both the Neuralink team and the patient to optimize control.
Elon Musk’s involvement in Neuralink underscores the growing interest and investment in brain-computer interface technology.
As the field advances, it holds the potential to revolutionize healthcare and human-computer interaction, offering new possibilities for individuals with neurological conditions.
