Liz Reid is the new Google AI Head, What Can We Expect from SGE?

In a LinkedIn post, Google announced Liz Reid as the new head of Search. Reid has been with Google since 2003, and the bulk of her work involved Search’s AI, known as its Search Generative Experience” (SGE), and multi-search. As the new head of the company, she aims to reign to ‘shape the future.’

In her new role, Reid will report to Prabhakar Raghavan, a long-time senior vice president of the company responsible for areas such as search, assistants, and ads, among others.

Who is Liz Ried?

The new head of search at Google, Reid, has been a Googler for the last 20 years. She is credited as one of the earliest pioneers of Google Maps and Local Search and helped Google redefine modern-day mapmaking with AI. Also, Reid was the first female engineer in the company’s New York office.

She has spent the last couple of years working on both AI search and multi-search, which together point to a new way of thinking about Google. In a LinkedIn post announcing her new role, Reid noted all the new search tools, including the new Circle to Search feature, Google Lens, and other new ways of thinking about search. “With SGE,” she wrote, “we can serve a wider range of information needs and answer new types of questions, including more complex questions, like comparisons or longer queries.”

What can we expect from SGE?

Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) is a new approach to search results that uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to provide users with quick and clear overviews of search topics without having to click on individual web pages.

Google CEO, Sundar Pichai and others have been saying AI is the future for some time but have preached patience as the company tries to wrangle and improve all this nascent technology. But now that Reid and Venkatachary are leading the product, Google’s AI era may arrive sooner rather than later. Reid states that we’ve entered an ‘exciting time’ for search as user positivity behind queries reportedly grows in Google’s ‘major markets.’

Also, in an official statement, Google said, “We have great momentum in Search, with recent improvements in search quality, new ways to search like Circle to Search, and features that use generative AI to help with even more complex questions. For example, SGE (Search Generative Experience) is still just a Search Labs feature and has already been used in billions of queries. We are excited to bring our search teams together under its leadership.”

Google Search will almost certainly look more like SGE over time. It will increasingly trade links for answers, and Reid has acknowledged that figuring out how to cite those answers and continue to be a good partner on the open web is part of her ongoing challenge.

With SGE, the search engine will be able to serve a wider range of information needs and answer new types of questions, including more complex questions, like comparisons or longer queries.

Apart from Reid, Search’s chief scientist will now be Pandu Nayak, a seasoned executive in charge of ranking and quality. Cheenu Venkatachary, who has also worked on AI products in Search, will take his place. Cathy Edwards, who oversaw a large portion of the development for Google News and Google Discover, is joining Google’s long-term bets team in the interim.
