TikTok is taking a significant step toward enhancing transparency on its platform by introducing an “AI-generated” label for content containing watermarked AI elements. The label will be automatically applied to content created with AI on other platforms, such as OpenAI’s DALL·E 3 or Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator. This move makes TikTok the first social media platform to support this initiative, signalling its commitment to enhancing user trust and combating deceptive practices.
Content Credentials are a technology developed by Adobe, Microsoft, and other stakeholders to add metadata to content, indicating its source and whether it has been generated or edited by AI. By automatically applying an “AI-generated”to third-party content containing metadata tags indicative of AI generation, TikTok aims to empower users to make informed decisions while engaging with AI-generated content.
The implementation of Content Credentials is part of TikTok’s broader efforts to maintain a safe and transparent environment for its users. By partnering with Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), TikTok is paving the way for cross-platform transparency, allowing other platforms to detect andAI-generated content created on TikTok.
This move not only ensures that users are aware of the AI-driven nature of content but also alleviates the burden on creators to disclose such information manually. With content credentials attached to AI-generated content, TikTok sets a new standard for responsible content consumption and distribution across platforms.
Moreover, TikTok’s commitment to combating deceptive artificial intelligence(AI) practices, particularly in critical areas like elections, underscores its proactive stance on mitigating potential harm. By firmly prohibiting the dissemination of misleading AI-generated content, TikTok reinforces its commitment to fostering a safe and trustworthy environment for its users.
By leading the way in implementing content credentials and partnering with industry stakeholders, TikTok sets a new standard for transparency in social media. This initiative not only benefits TikTok users but also encourages other platforms to adopt similar practices, contributing to a safer and more transparent online environment.
