AI India

India has less than 2000 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineers

The artificial intelligence (AI) revolution is transforming industries around the world, and India is no exception. A recent study by Xpheno has highlighted a pressing issue in India’s artificial intelligence landscape. The research reveals that India currently has less than 2,000 senior engineers capable of developing core AI products.

This is a concerning figure considering the country’s size and technological advancements. According to Analytics India Magazine, the country has over 2,20,000 software engineers. Taking these factors into account, it is clear that there is a significant gap in the talent pool for AI development in India.

“Core engineering of and for AI remains concentrated with high niche micro-talent pools operating outside India. The core engineering of AI has minor footprints in India. Global AI products looking for service and support skills in India are the first major wave the tech sector will ride in the AI domain.” said Prasadh MS, head of workforce research, Xpheno India.

The significance of this shortage cannot be overstated, as AI plays an increasingly vital role across various industries, from healthcare to transportation. To maintain a competitive edge in global innovation and drive economic growth, India must invest in its AI talent pool.

There are several contributing factors to the shortage of AI engineers in India. One reason is the limited availability of AI education and training within the country’s educational institutions, resulting in a reduced supply of skilled AI engineers entering the workforce. Also, the emigration of talented AI professionals to foreign countries in search of higher salaries, better research facilities, and access to global talent networks has worsened the talent shortage in India.

The scarcity of AI engineers leaves many Indian businesses reliant on foreign technology providers, raising concerns about data privacy and national security. By developing indigenous AI solutions, India can protect the interests of its citizens and businesses while fostering a self-reliant technological ecosystem.

Several measures must be taken to address the talent shortage.

Educational institutions need to adapt their curricula to include AI-specific courses, equipping students with the necessary skills to enter the workforce as AI engineers. Collaborations between universities and industry leaders can help ensure graduates are prepared for real-world AI applications.

Government policies should also incentivize businesses to invest in AI research and development, promoting innovation and job creation within the sector. Public-private partnerships can facilitate knowledge sharing and upskill the existing workforce to meet the evolving demands of the AI landscape.

Retaining top AI talent in India is just as critical as nurturing the next generation of engineers. By providing competitive salaries, opportunities for professional development, and an environment that values innovation, India can attract and retain the brightest minds to drive its AI ambitions forward.

The urgent need for AI engineers in India must be acknowledged and acted upon. By prioritizing AI education, fostering innovation, and creating a supportive ecosystem, India can bridge this talent gap and secure its position as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
