OpenAI is planning to develop its own AI processor units, leaving the dependency on Nvidia’s AI GPUs, such as the H100, which is currently one of the leaders in the market. The need for OpenAI to enter artificial intelligence hardware manufacturing arrived after the company faced two major semiconductor supply crises the previous year (one for the automotive and PC industries and the other for the AI industry).
Sam Altman, Open AI CEO believes that more than traditional chip makers are needed to meet the current needs of the AI chip industry. So wants to build one of its own to ensure a proper supply to OpenAI and other companies.
OpenAI’s Artificial Intelligence processing units will be called neutral processing units (NPUs), found in AI PCs and dedicated processors reserved for AI-related work. The NPU will specifically be designed to handle AI processes, much like the Nvidia GPU, which frees up the processor from handling graphic-related tasks.
Why OpenAI is Entering AI Processor Manufacturing:
- OpenAI’s Hardware Ambitions: OpenAI is considering creating its own AI hardware to reduce reliance on Nvidia’s dominance in the market.
- Nvidia’s Market Position: Despite potential competition, Nvidia remains a key player in AI hardware, having been the third most valuable US company.
- AI Processor Development: OpenAI is in discussions to produce Neutral Processing Units (NPUs) for AI tasks, which may eventually replace Nvidia’s hardware.
- Consumer Impact: While OpenAI’s hardware may not appear in consumer shops, the possibility exists, and Nvidia is adapting by releasing products like Chat With RTX.

Sam Altman estimated the cost of building new semiconductor manufacturing facilities and supporting infrastructure at around $ 7 trillion. He is in talks with chip makers and investors worldwide such as Singapore’s Temasek, and MGX (Abu Dhabi-based new investment company) as traditional venture capitalists are less likely to invest such large sums.
MGX is a newly established AI-focused funding company launched by UAE based in Abu Dhabi and chaired by Sheikh Tahoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan. The United Arab Emirates to become a leader in the global artificial intelligence industry is in talks with Sam Altman and Open AI plans to enter the AI hardware market.
If the plan goes well for both UAE and OpenAI, they will soon become leaders in the AI market. UAE will become a hub for AI development, increasing the country’s financial resources and political backing. OpenAI will start incorporating its chips and removing Nvidia’s hardware. Once successful on its system, it might start renting or selling to other companies.

Nvidia stands in third position after Microsoft and Apple due to its strong AI hardware. If any company wants to get into AI they must buy Nvidia Hardware. With Open AI entering into the AI hardware market, Nvidia might lose its stand but not fade away completely.
