OpenAI Co-Founder Ilya Sutskever Launches Safe Superintelligence Inc. for Secure AI Development

OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever launches Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), focusing on developing a potent and secure AI system. Joined by former OpenAI developer Daniel Levy and former Y Combinator partner Daniel Gross, SSI aims to prioritize safety while advancing AI capabilities without commercial pressures.

Co-founder of OpenAI and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever is launching a new AI business with a safety-focused focus. In a post on Wednesday, Sutskever disclosed Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a startup with “one goal and one product:” developing a potent and secure artificial intelligence system.

Former OpenAI developer Daniel Levy and former Y Combinator partner Daniel Gross joined Sutskever, who served as the company’s principal scientist for a long period, to start SSI.

According to the statement, SSI is a firm that “approaches safety and capabilities in tandem,” which enables the business to prioritize safety while rapidly advancing its AI system. Additionally, it highlights the external pressure that AI teams at companies like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI frequently encounter, claiming that their “singular focus” shields them from “distraction by management overhead or product cycles.”

The release states, “Our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures.” “We can scale in peace in this way.” Daniel Levy, a former member of the technical staff of OpenAI, and Daniel Gross, a former AI lead at Apple, co-founded SSI alongside Sutskever.

Sutskever spearheaded the effort to remove OpenAI CEO Sam Altman last year. Sutskever announced the beginning of a new project when he left OpenAI in May. Jan Leike, an AI researcher, announced his resignation from OpenAI shortly after Sutskever left, citing safety procedures that had “taken a backseat to shiny products.” When announcing her retirement, OpenAI policy researcher Gretchen Krueger also raised safety concerns.

SSI is unlikely to follow OpenAI’s lead and form alliances with Apple and Microsoft anytime soon. In an interview with Bloomberg, Sutskever claims that safe superintelligence will be SSI’s initial offering and that the business “will not do anything else” until that time.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever for his pivotal role in advancing deep learning, describing his contributions as sparking “the big bang of deep learning.Huang highlighted Sutskever’s work in developing powerful AI models and algorithms that have significantly influenced the field of artificial intelligence. This acknowledgement underscores the transformative impact of Sutskever’s research and innovations, which have propelled AI technology forward and shaped its current landscape.
