In a recent interview with CNBC, Microsoft’s new AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, shared his controversial view that internet content should be considered “freeware,” available for use in training AI models without needing permission.
Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, and the co-founder and former head of applied AI at DeepMind, stated that “With respect to content that is already on the open web, the social contract of that content since the 90s has been that it is fair use. Anyone can copy it, recreate with it, reproduce with it. That has been freeware, if you like. That’s been the understanding,”
This stance comes amidst ongoing debates over the ethical and legal implications of using creators’ works to develop AI tools.
Suleyman’s comments have ignited discussions about the balance between innovation and intellectual property rights in the AI era.
Suleyman’s remarks are occurring at a time when recently released AI tools, such as ChatGPT, which was developed by OpenAI in 2022, start discussions and debates, including how the AI tools themselves use the work of others to train.
Many creative writers and artists have been to court with companies that offer artificial intelligence services because they have been using the work of such artists without their permission. Nonetheless, Suleyman contends that the use of web content has always been fair in accordance with the social contract formed since the 1990s.
Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind was hired to be Microsoft’s AI head in April this year. He summarized his first 2 months working at the company as ‘exhilarating’ and ‘fulfilling.’ He noted that there are so many ways to interact with many people, organizations, and projects in Microsoft.
Suleyman also said that Microsoft pays significant attention to AI and that its leaders, such as Satya Nadella and Kevin Scott, are leading what Suleyman considers to be ‘the greatest technological shift of our time.’ They also said that Microsoft has a supportive and strong culture in terms of integration and was easy to join.
But Suleyman is not out of controversy, especially for his remarks on employing content from the Internet as the database for training the AI models. Some claim that it is wrong and infringes on them in some way to reproduce their work without acquiring their approval. It is for this reason that as more products with AI continue to be developed, the controversy about how the AI tools employ the work of others in training will also persist.
