Apple and Google are in talks to use Gemini for generative AI features on iPhones, a potential game changer for Google's chatbot. Apple's AI efforts are not as advanced as believed, considering its partnership with Google for generative AI capabilities.
Apple and Google AI Partnership
Apple iPhones will be using Google Gemini soon. Apple is in talks with Google to incorporate Google’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Gemini, into the next iPhone This collaboration of two global tech giants aims to enhance the iPhone’s capabilities by integrating a powerful AI model capable of generating text and analyzing vast amounts of data.
Though the discussion between Apple and Google is at an early stage, the details of the potential partnership are still being worked out. Apple is also considering other AI companies for this initiative. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has indicated that Apple will introduce new AI features this year. Competitors like Samsung and Google have already integrated Gemini into their latest devices for tasks such as video editing and audio summarization.
Recently, Apple Inc. acquired the Canadian AI startup DarwinAI. This strategic move by Apple will help in developing its generative AI capabilities as compared to other market leaders like Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT, Microsoft CoPilot, and others.
However, due to the limitations of DarwinAI, Apple is looking for a partnership opportunity with Google for the integration of Gemini. Google Gemini is a family of multimodal large language models developed by Google. It serves as the successor to LaMDA and PaLM 2. Gemini was announced on December 6, 2023, positioning itself as a competitor to OpenAI’s GPT-4. Also Read: Apple Generative AI Features in iPhone and Mac in 2024, says Tim Cook
Apple has been using Google features since 2007 by providing key services like Google Maps and being the default search engine on Safari, for which it pays Apple over $18 billion annually.
While Apple has been developing its own AI model, it has faced delays, prompting the company to explore external options like Google’s Gemini. The integration of Gemini could potentially bring Google’s AI to a vast number of iPhone users worldwide, making AI technology even more accessible.
