Why Google Generative AI Search Is Available to Users Who Didn’t Opt-In

Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is now available to users who have not opted for it. SGE, an artificial intelligence-powered makeover for search, was rolled out last year by Google to test the functionality and usage by the original audience, spreading over 120 countries.

As per the reports by SearchEngineLand earlier, SGE can be accessed through the Google search labs, but now it is available to users who have not signed up for its testing.

Google has confirmed the news by saying that the test is happening on a “small percentage of search traffic” in “certain categories,” and that too only in the United States. Google might expand it to other parts of the world later.

What is SGE and How does it work?

SGE expands to Search Generative Experience, which is an early step in transforming the Search experience with the help of generative AI. When using SGE, people will notice their search results page with familiar web results, organized in a new way to help them get more from a single search.

You can ask the new kind of questions along with conversational follow-ups. Earlier, we needed to break the query and then find answers to it but now that Google Search is more refined, it gives suggestions along with further queries and links. Here is a preview of SGE integrated into Google search.

Google launched SGE back in May 2023, which gives an AI-generated overview or answer to the query. Earlier we used to get a highlighted result and a snippet pulled from that website. Here in this case when asked if honey ever spoils, it gave a Google SGE output above the snippet along with an option to ask any follow-up query.

Google might take some time to completely roll the SGE tool throughout the world. Right now it has expanded to a subset of US users who have not signed up to have valuable feedback especially from not opted users. It strongly believes that AI would enhance Google’s search tool leaving behind AI-powered search engines like Perplexity or the upcoming search engine by Open AI.

Even though SGE search results may vary from person to person Google is checking on a range of products. Let’s see how it completely unfolds when launched all over.

How SGE Supercharging Search with Generative AI

Improving Search with generative AI: With new generative AI capabilities in Search, we’re now taking more of the work out of searching, so you’ll be able to understand a topic faster, uncover new viewpoints and insights, and get things done more easily.

Helping you shop with generative AI: With generative AI in Search, we can help you understand the full picture when you’re shopping, making even the most considered and complex purchase decisions faster and much easier.

Taking a responsible approach: There are known limitations with generative AI and LLMs, and Search, even today, will not always get it right. We’re taking a responsible and deliberate approach to bringing new generative AI capabilities to Search.

Starting with Search Labs: Starting with an experiment in Search Labs, called SGE (Search Generative Experience), available on Chrome desktop and the Google App (Android and iOS) in the U.S. (English-only at launch), so that it can incorporate feedback and continue to improve the experience over time.
