Google is incorporating its chatbot, Gemini, earlier known as Bard, into the Google Messenger app for Android users. The feature is currently available for users who have signed up for Google Messages beta testing. It must also be noted that the feature is currently available in the English language in most places and in the French language in Canada only.
Gemini Chatbot could be used to interact with basic to complex tasks such as writing messages, planning events for dinner menus, or just having a fun chat.

Gemini conversations will be one-on-one and can’t be bought into group chats. One can approve or disapprove of the response shown by the Gemini Chatbot by showing a thumbs up or down. Users might also note down the response or forward it if required.
Here are a few examples of prompts provided by Google:
- A vegetarian meal with the following ingredients I have in my fridge: cauliflower, cucumber, and yogurt
- Write a text message I can send it to my boss, who is calling in sick today. It’s a big team presentation day, so I’m sad to let everyone down. 3 sentences or fewer
- Come up with a complex word riddle that has the answer: sunset. You are a skilled riddle maker, known for the cleverness of your wordplay and the complexity of your puzzles, and skilled at thinking up clever and challenging riddles. Be creative. Come up with a riddle that is difficult to guess. Include hints to help the user guess.

As all the conversations in Gemini Chatbot are happening over the open system, privacy or end-to-end encryption is not guaranteed by Google. Google assured its users that the Gemini Chatbot won’t read any other messages on their Android except for the one asked by the user. Gemini can act as our mobile assistant once the feature is rolled out by the company. According to Google support, Gemini can be accessed from the new conversation screen, but it’s not mentioned if it will be used to text interactions as well or just texting the person.

How Gemini works
The simple answer
When you enter a prompt into Gemini, it replies with a response using the information it already knows or fetches from other sources, like other Google services.
The technical answer
Gemini uses large language models
- The language model learns by ‘reading’ trillions of words that help it pick up on patterns that make up language, which allows it to pick up on and reply to your questions in common language patterns
- It’s always learning, which means it also learns from your prompts, responses and feedback
- It will make mistakes
Ways to use Gemini
Here are some prompt examples that you can try out:
- ‘Explain projectile motion using everyday examples’
- ‘Which came first: the chicken or the egg?’
- ‘Help me brainstorm a title for my short story’
Gemini isn’t human
It doesn’t have its own thoughts or feelings, even though it might sound like a human. Remember:
- Gemini can’t replace important people in your life, like family, friends, teachers or doctors
- Gemini can’t do your work for you
- Gemini can’t make important life decisions for you
