For the first time, Jony Ive has acknowledged that he is collaborating with OpenAI on a new piece of mobile hardware. It is encouraging to learn that the renowned former chief design officer of Apple is once again trying to offer his creative flare to the IT industry, as he has a reputation for keeping quiet about active projects at his new LoveFrom firm. Despite being the product of a two-day interview process and Ive’s lengthy story in The New York Times, there are still very few details available regarding the OpenAI device.
The emergence of this specific product design partnership is not surprising. It was revealed about this time last year that Sam Altman of OpenAI and Ive were discussing the development of AI hardware. Unidentified sources at the time also claimed that Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank, had participated in the discussions.

Given Ive’s past accomplishments, it is reasonable to assume that the LoveFrom and OpenAI partnership will include a product aimed at consumers. The NYT article makes similar suggestions, stating that Ive and Altman discussed the potential benefits of enhanced AI for visual intelligence, messaging, and end users’ comprehension of complex requests.
Following multiple dinner meetings, the two decided to move forward with developing a product, with LoveFrom spearheading the design phase. To support the new AI product and brand, money has been raised privately to get things started. According to the New York Times, before 2024 is out, the startup company may look to raise $1 billion in venture capital from digital investors.

The goal is to develop “a product that uses AI to create a computing experience that is less socially disruptive than the iPhone,” as far as we know. Sadly, the source story doesn’t delve much more into the apparatus’s specifications. This makes sense given that competitors are still having trouble developing a game-changing AI app and that several well-known AI devices, such as the Rabbit R1 and the Humane AI Pin, have malfunctioned. The newly established AI product company will seek to maintain the first-mover advantage for as long as feasible while keeping its cards close to the vest.
