Figma Introduces FigJam AI to Streamline Design and Planning

Figma's FigJam AI offers designers a powerful set of generative AI tools to simplify the creation of design and planning templates, ultimately saving valuable time and resources. The open beta is currently available, with the possibility of continued free access in the future, and Figma is considering further AI developments to enhance its platform's capabilities.

Figma, a prominent player in the realm of product design applications, has introduced FigJam AI, a groundbreaking suite of generative AI tools for its collaborative whiteboard service, FigJam. This new offering is designed to expedite the creation of ready-to-use templates for common design and planning projects, alleviating the manual preparation typically required. The ultimate goal is to empower designers to focus on more critical tasks.

FigJam AI is now available in open beta, commencing on November 7th, and the company has stated that it is “currently free” for all customer tiers. The question of whether FigJam AI will remain free in its general availability phase is currently pending clarification from Figma.

One of the key features of FigJam AI is the “Generate” functionality, which offers a selection of suggested prompts for creating templates for activities like flowcharts, icebreakers, brainstorming sessions, and 1:1 meeting planners. Users can also describe their requirements in plain language within a text box, with the AI providing default content suggestions, such as adding timelines, project counts, and milestones for generating Gantt charts. Users have the flexibility to modify or delete sections of the generated projects, similar to manually created ones.

Additionally, FigJam AI introduces “Sort,” a feature that automatically categorises stickies, the virtual equivalent of sticky notes for idea jotting, into different groups based on common themes. The “Summarise” function extracts a summary of information from groups of stickies with a single click. These new features can be used alongside “Jambot,” a ChatGPT-powered FigJam widget introduced in beta in August.

Dylan Field, the co-founder and CEO of Figma, shared that the company is exploring further AI-related developments, and the initial features of FigJam AI serve as a promising starting point. The current FigJam AI beta utilises OpenAI foundation models, which Field indicates can be seamlessly replaced with other foundation AI models in the future.

Field emphasised Figma’s strategic approach to integrating AI into their platform, focusing on the most impactful use cases rather than attempting to cover every possible application. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that AI adds substantial value to the product.

Figma’s FigJam AI is set to revolutionise the design and planning process, automating the creation of collaborative whiteboard projects and freeing up valuable time for designers to address critical tasks. With an array of innovative features and integration with ChatGPT-powered Jambot, FigJam AI aims to enhance productivity and streamline workflows for designers and planning professionals.
