Elon Musk threatens to ban all Apple devices from Tesla and SpaceX if Apple integrates OpenAI's ChatGPT, citing security concerns and data privacy issues.
Elon Musk Condemns Apple-OpenAI Deal, Plans to Block Apple Devices
Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk has vowed to block all Apple devices in his organizations if the company starts implementing OpenAI’s ChatGPT at the OS level. Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, has been vocal about the dangerous potential of the AI chatbot.
On the social media platform X, Musk wrote, “That is an unacceptable security violation” about the rumours that Apple is in talks with OpenAI to integrate the chatbot into its devices. He also said that all visitors to his company would leave their Apple devices at the door.
This comes after Apple and OpenAI disclosed that they partnered to release ChatGPT 4o on iOS, macOS, and iPadOS for free, but with certain restrictions. The firm has also stated that users can associate their paid OpenAI subscription to unlock further advantages and availability on these devices in the second half of this year.
However, Musk is not confident in OpenAI’s motives and thinks the company will take ‘ sneaky ways’ to collect user data without Apple’s consent. He has also criticised Apple’s decision to collaborate with OpenAI, arguing that the company should have created its own AI model.
This is not the first time Musk has expressed his opinion on OpenAI and the company’s CEO, Sam Altman. In March, Musk sued the company and Altman for betrayal of the startup’s original goal of using artificial intelligence for the betterment of society, not for revenue making.
The open question is whether Apple will pay attention to Musk’s warning and evaluate the chances of cutting its ties with OpenAI. However, one thing is clear: Musk also does not shy away from expressing his opinions and has no problem making sweeping decisions for the safety and privacy of his companies.
Last but not least, Musk has threatened that his businesses will block usage and interaction with Apple devices if OpenAI becomes integrated with iOS. He said that was a gross violation of security, and guess what? Visitors would have to leave their Apple gadgets at the door, and they would be housed in a Faraday cage. Musk has also been known to be against the partnership between Apple and OpenAI and has proposed that the firm employ illicit means to gather the details of the users. It remains to be seen whether Apple will reconsider its partnership with OpenAI, but one thing is clear: A few years ago, Musk showed that he is not afraid to take rather radical steps to protect the security and privacy of his companies.
