Indian star cricketer Virat Kohli became the latest target of the deepfake AI technology. In a recent viral video, digital scammers morphed a video of Virat Kohli to create a fake advertisement. This ad falsely claims that the player has made high returns from small investments.
In the video, Virat Kohli is seen promoting a betting application called “Aviator.”
Also, using this specific app, he is seen endorsing illegal betting as a way to make more money at a faster rate on a low-key investment. He can be heard making a profit of Rs 81,000 from an investment of just Rs 1,000.

Kohli can be seen sharing the screen with the popular news presenter, Anjana Om Kashyap.
To make it look credible and authentic, the creators manipulated footage and gave the impression that the ad was on air during a live news segment.

This deepfake video was originally taken from the popular interview of Virat Kohli with Graham Bensinger. And the altered video clips from Kohli’s prior interview have been synced with his AI-generated voice.
However, to prevent viewers from falling for the deceptive video, numerous social media users have flagged it.

Before Virat Kohli, a deep-fake video of veteran cricketer Sachin Tendulkar also went viral. The legendary cricketer is seen endorsing a gaming application with his daughter. In this video, the father-daughter duo is seen conveying the false idea that they made good returns from that online game.
However, Sachin Tendulkar himself shared a message on X saying that the video was fake and a misuse of technology.
He wrote, “These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see rampant misuse of technology. Request that everyone report videos, ads, & apps like these in large numbers. Social media platforms need to be alert and responsive to complaints. Swift action from their end is crucial to stopping the spread of misinformation and deepfakes.”
Other than cricket players, Bollywood actress Rashmika Mandhana earlier became a target when her image was superimposed onto another video.
At present, to safeguard the content from deepfake AI, it is important to adopt multifaceted approaches like watermarking, verification tools, copyright protection, and promoting awareness about deepfake technology and its adverse implications.
