A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been struck by US-based Synopsys and Tata Electronics, constructing India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, to expedite output at the fabrication unit.
Among other services, the US-based behemoth offers semiconductor players electronic design automation, silicon intellectual property, and system verification and validation.
Through the partnership, Tata Electronics will be able to expedite the development of chips at its AI-enabled semiconductor fab plant in Dholera, Gujarat, by creating a foundry design platform. In addition, it will make it possible to construct IP development, process design kits, TCAD (Technology Computer Aided Design) flow setup, factory automation, and data analytics.

The CEO and managing director of Tata Electronics, Randhir Thakur, stated, “We view Synopsys as a key partner and accelerator in our journey due to the expertise they bring in semiconductor design and services.”
The Union Cabinet gave its approval in February for the Tata Group and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) to develop a semiconductor factory in Dholera.
For the factory, the Tata Group has set up INR 91,000 crore. in investment. At the facility, it hopes to produce 50,000 wafers a month. The factory’s chips are anticipated to fuel eight sectors: telecom, defence, consumer electronics, automotive, high-power computation, electric vehicles, and power electronics.
Currently, Tata Electronics is exporting semiconductor chips packed in a pilot line to partners in the US, Europe, and Japan from its R&D center in Bengaluru. The design work for semiconductor chips in a range of sizes, including 28 nm, 40 nm, 55 nm, and 65 nm, is also almost finished.

“Tata Electronics solidifies a critical pillar for a holistic approach to achieve its targets of being the first to bring semiconductor manufacturing to India,” the firm stated in a statement about its planned collaboration with Synopsys.
With a 27,000 crore investment, the business is also establishing a fab facility at Jagiroad in Assam in addition to the Dholera plant.
The Center’s numerous initiatives, such as the INR 76,000 crore allocation for the Semicon India program to expand the nation’s semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem, have fueled the corporations’ drive into the semiconductor industry.
