India Plans to Acquire 10,000 GPUs for AI Mission in Public-Private Partnership

As part of its India AI Mission, the government plans to purchase 10,000 GPUs (graphics processing units) in the next two to three months via a public-private partnership, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday.

Vaishnaw also presented plans for creating artificial intelligence (AI) that is accessible to everyone, modelled after the successful Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), during her speech at the Global India AI Summit in Delhi.

“We plan to invest in a computing infrastructure for AI with at least 10,000 GPUs. Once more, public-private cooperation will be used to maximize industry efficiencies for this greater good. AI innovation centres will be established,” Vaishnaw announced.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections this year, the Union Cabinet approved the Rs 10,000 crore India AI Mission. Vaishnaw emphasized that India will use AI like its successful model of digital public infrastructure. The minister noted that the digital public infrastructure (DPI) is a great example of a market where no single service provider or payment processor monopolizes the service.

“Everyone joins the platform when the government invests in it, and we’re going to take the same approach with AI as well,” Vaishnaw stated. He added that the government is developing laws and regulations on artificial intelligence. 

The nations at the Global AI Summit will discuss several facets of AI regulation over the next two days, according to Vaishnaw, who stated that global cooperation among like-minded nations will be necessary for AI regulation.

In India, we’ve realized that artificial intelligence (AI) can be a useful tool in solving many of the issues we confront. Vaishnaw remarked that we must simultaneously control the dangers.

Experts from the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), delegates, veterans of the startup and industry, practitioners of AI, academics, students, and representatives from the Central and State governments were present at the event.
