AI’s Evolution in India
India’s progress in the field of AI has been steady, with significant speed-ups over recent years. Starting from computer science research work at IIT Kanpur and IISc Bangalore during the 1960s to the establishment of the Knowledge Based Computer Systems (KBCS) project in 1986, India prepared the base for its AI advancements.
In the 1990s, the C-DAC was made, enhancing supercomputing power. It also gave some support to AI research in an indirect way. Software companies from India started to look into AI uses, mainly for automating business processes.
In the 2000s, the country witnessed a stage of growth. IT giants such as TCS, Infosys, and Wipro have started investing in AI research and development. Furthermore, academic establishments increased their AI and machine learning programs during this time period, which prepared for the AI explosion seen in the 2010s.
