It is a startup accelerator program with its primary base at STATION F, in Paris and is available to candidates from the European Union only. Although most of it will remain hidden from startups, selected ones will collaborate with Meta’s Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) lab and will have access to models like Llama that Meta has made open source. Marco Pancini, META’s Head of EU Affairs, said in a news release, ‘META’s programme is a continuation of the company’s dedication to open innovation.
“For more than a decade Meta, a pioneer in open innovation in AI, and through our publicly available, state-of-the-art AI models, we’ve seen firsthand the impact they can have on the broader community. Our Llama models have been downloaded millions of times, with tens of thousands of new versions available on repositories like Hugging Face. Through this program we can help European developers innovate faster, bringing growth to their markets and propelling the European ecosystem forward.” – Marco Pancini, Head of EU Affairs, Meta

Included in the first cohort, started in 2023 with ten startups, focused on robotics, retail technology, and cybersecurity,. They were Pollen Robotics, Fringuant, and Qevlar AI. “With all the momentum and enthusiasm in AI right now, Meta’s program at STATION F quickly became one of the most sought-after programs on campus. We are very excited to hear that Meta – along with their partners Hugging Face and Scaleway – are planning to bring the program to a European level in order to work with some of the region’s leading AI innovators.” – Roxanne Varza, Director, Station F.
Program expansion is timely given the increasing efforts by Europe to position itself as the right and responsible ‘tech’ innovator, especially in developing and regulating AI today amidst the continued but shifting dynamics of Big Tech relationships. The involvement of Scaleway brings the European ingredient to the proposition; it offers co-location hosting services that help startups maintain data localization within the European Union.
