On May 14, 2024, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that CEO Adam Selipsky would step down from his role next month. Selipsky will step down on June 3. He will be succeeded by Matt Garman, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Amazon Web Services.
Andy Jassy, the current CEO of Amazon, announced the shuffle in AWS’s hierarchy, via a memo to the whole team. He wrote, “Adam is now going to move onto his next challenge (after taking a well-deserved respite), and Matt Garman will become CEO of AWS, effective June 3rd.”
Replying, Selipsky wrote, “In the back of my head I thought there might be another chapter down the road at some point, but I never wanted to distract myself from what we are all working so hard to achieve. Given the state of the business and the leadership team, now is an appropriate moment for me to make this transition, and to take the opportunity to spend more time with family for a while, recharge a bit, and create some mental free space to reflect and consider the possibilities.”
Adam Selipsky was one of the first vice presidents of Amazon Web Services in 2005. He spent 11 years excellently directing AWS Sales, Marketing, and Support before leaving to become CEO of Tableau. Selipsky’s leadership has always been commended with AWS reaching a $100 billion annual revenue run rate and an accelerated YoY revenue.
However, Selipsky’s reign saw its fair share of challenges. AWS underwent at least two rounds of layoffs since last year, as part of broader corporate downsizing efforts that have led to the dismissal of over 27,000 employees. Also, its revenue growth slowdown is a concern, as it has fallen behind its competitors like Microsoft and Google.

Meet Matt Garman
Matt Garman joined AWS in 2005. He began as a summer MBA intern and became a full-time employee in 2006 as one of the original AWS product managers. Initially, he worked across all of AWS to construct AWS’s first service-level agreements, define new features, and develop new pricing options. Then, he went on to become the company’s first EC2 product manager, leading EC2 product management throughout its early years of development.
During that time, he also oversaw the team that defined, launched, and ran EBS. Matt finally became the general manager of all AWS Compute services in 2016, a role he held for roughly four years. After 14 years, at the request of Andy Jassy, Matt transferred to AWS’s demand generation side to oversee WW Sales, Marketing, Support, and Professional Services.
Andy Jassy describes him as “customer focused, a terrific product leader, inventive, a clever problem-solver,” and “right a lot.”
During the early years of his career, Garman held leadership positions at Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), a crucial component of AWS’s $90 billion revenue business. He played a pivotal role in the launch of Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), a noteworthy storage service.

Potential Challenges
As the new leader of this influential tech company, Garman will need to address several challenges. One of these challenges is the intense competition in the cloud-computing market, particularly with the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence technologies. Competition from tech giants like Microsoft and Google is heating up, as both companies are rapidly expanding their data centers and investing in generative AI offerings. AWS’ revenue growth, though steady, is being outpaced by Azure and Google Cloud, which are growing at faster rates.
In order to maintain AWS’s dominant position, he will need to make strategic decisions that allow the company to adapt to changing market conditions while continuing to innovate.
