Colorful Navigation: YouTube Color-Based Visual Sorting for Mobile Users

YouTube is currently in the experimental phase of testing a new feature that enables users to sort videos by colour, enhancing the visual experience of browsing the platform. This innovative feature adds filter options like Red, Blue, and Green to the existing sorting options, enhancing visual appeal and browsing experience for users.

While the feature is still in the early testing stage and only accessible to a limited number of users, it has been spotted on both Android and iOS mobile devices.

The colour filter option appears alongside other filter choices on the homepage, such as ‘New To You,’ ‘Mixes,’ ‘Music,’ and more.

Users may notice a pop-up window prompting them to try the new feature, allowing them to create a video feed based on colours such as red, blue, or green.

Although the feature is still in testing, it appears that YouTube’s algorithm selects videos with dominant colours in their thumbnails to populate the colour-coded feeds. This feature does not affect the normal homepage feed but adds a new option at the top for users interested in browsing by colour.

YouTube spokesperson Allison Toh confirmed the testing of this feature, stating that it’s available to a limited number of users on mobile devices. However, the purpose and future plans for this feature remain undisclosed by YouTube.

While YouTube’s colour-based video sorting is a novel experiment, similar colour-coding methods are used in other platforms for content organisation. For example, macOS allows users to assign colour labels to files and folders for easier management.

Additionally, YouTube is planning to launch a dedicated app for the Apple Vision Pro headset, though specific details and timelines are yet to be announced. Apple’s VR headset currently does not support YouTube, Spotify, or Netflix apps, with Apple emphasising its focus on delivering high-quality spatial media experiences.
