The University of Florida inaugurates Malachowsky Hall, a state-of-the-art facility for AI and data science, with NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, hailing it as a 'starship for knowledge discovery.' The building marks a significant collaboration between UF, NVIDIA, and Florida, solidifying UF's position as a leading public university in the AI domain.
The University of Malachowsky partnership with NVIDIA
The University of Florida, in partnership with NVIDIA and the state of Florida, has unveiled the remarkable Malachowsky Hall for Data Science and Information Technology. This seven-story, 260,000-square-foot structure is a pivotal addition to UF’s quest to leverage the transformative capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI). It reinforces its status as one of the nation’s top public universities.
Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, celebrated the inauguration of Malachowsky Hall by drawing parallels between the AI capabilities it hosts and a “starship for knowledge discovery.” Much like Steve Jobs’ iconic description of personal computers as “the bicycle of the mind,” Huang equated Malachowsky Hall and its HiPerGator AI supercomputer to a vehicle that promises to propel intellectual pursuits to uncharted territories.

The building’s name pays homage to NVIDIA co-founder Chris Malachowsky, an UF alumnus. This collaboration has propelled UF to the forefront of AI innovation. Huang and UF’s new president, Ben Sasse, met to discuss the broader impact of AI and data science, emphasizing adaptability in a rapidly changing world where careers may require frequent reinvention.
Malachowsky Hall is designed to serve as a bridge between academia, industry, research, and government. It features innovative collaboration spaces, labs, a 400-seat auditorium, high-performance computing study areas, and a rooftop terrace with stunning campus views. Sustainability is an integral part of the building’s design, incorporating energy-efficient systems and rainwater harvesting facilities.
The inauguration of Malachowsky Hall signifies a significant milestone in UF’s efforts to integrate AI and academia, supported by Malachowsky and NVIDIA. In 2020, they donated $50 million towards HiPerGator, one of the most powerful AI supercomputers in the country. With additional state support, UF has expanded its AI faculty, further enhancing AI-focused courses, workshops, and projects across the university to benefit its 55,000 students.

The opening of Malachowsky Hall will create new opportunities for UF, its students, and the state of Florida to harness AI innovations across various sectors. Huang encouraged students to pursue knowledge through AI with the determination to go as far as possible.
In essence, Malachowsky Hall is a symbol of UF’s commitment to advancing AI and data science education, fostering collaboration, and providing students with cutting-edge resources to excel in this rapidly evolving field. With NVIDIA’s visionary support, the University of Florida is poised to lead in the integration of AI and academia, contributing to the growth of the AI industry in the state and the nation.
