A deepfake is a type of synthetic media that uses artificial intelligence to superimpose one person’s likeness onto another person’s body. This can be done with images, videos, or audio recordings. Deepfakes can be very convincing, and it can be difficult to tell the difference between a deepfake and a real recording.

Top 5 Deepfake Scams that Stormed the Internet in 2023

1. Obama’s Deppfake Video: In this fake video a fraudster has imposters to impersonate the source’s speech and mannerisms. Obama’s Deepfake video was developed by BuzzFeed with actor Jordan Peele combining After Effects CC and FakeApp. Peele’s jaw was superimposed over Obama’s, with a jawline that matched Peele’s mouth motions replacing Obama’s speech and lip movement. After that, FakeApp was used to improve the footage with almost 50 hours of automated processing.

2. Mark Zuckerberg deepfake where he speaks frankly: In this fake video artist Bill Posters uploaded it on Facebook in June in a reaction to Facebook’s failure to remove the clip of Nancy Pelosi. In this video, it is shown that Mark Zuckerberg brags about how the site “owns” its followers. The video was created as part of Posters and Daniel Howe’s Spectre on how social media can be used to deceive people. The  Mark Zuckerberg deepfake video was created with the VDR (video conversation substitution) software from the Israeli `Firm Canny AI.

3. Zelesky Deepfake Video on Russia and Ukraine war: This is one the most talked about Deepfake videos where Zelesky surfaced on social media and was posted on a Ukrainian news website by hackers. However, this video was immediately debunked and removed from the internet. In this video, it is shown that the President asked its soldiers to lay down weapons, at a time when the entire country was ravaged by Russian troops.

4. Nancy Pelosi Deepfake: It was not a deepfake in the traditional sense; instead, it illustrated why its possible misuse has become so dreaded in geopolitics. The 2019 clip was slowed down by 25% and the video changed the pitch to make it appear as though Nancy Pelosi, the United States House of Representatives speaker, was shouting her words.

5. Tom Cruise & Seth Rogen Deepfake: Ctrl Shift Face, a YouTube channel uploaded the deepfake video of actor Bill Hader from Late Night with David Letterman (2008). In the video, the actor’s face was replaced with Tom Cruise and Set Rogen in context with the topic he was communicating. The video was posted on 6 August 2019; the creator later said he used software to generate this to spread awareness on how deepfake can be used for misleading people.

The potential negative impacts of deepfakes are significant. Deepfakes can be used to spread misinformation and damage reputations. They can also be used to create non-consensual pornography, or to blackmail someone.
