At the recent G7 summit, Pope Francis emerged as a significant critic of artificial intelligence, stressing the urgent need for human control over AI technologies. He cautioned political leaders about the dangers of AI autonomy, particularly the development of lethal autonomous robots capable of making life-and-death decisions without human intervention.
The Pope emphasized that safeguarding human dignity requires ensuring that humans remain the ultimate decision-makers in the face of advancing AI capabilities.
Francis stated, as per the Associated Press, “We would condemn humanity to a future without hope if we took away people’s ability to make decisions about themselves and their lives, by dooming them to depend on the choices of machines. We need to ensure and safeguard a space for proper human control over the choices made by artificial intelligence programs: Human dignity itself depends on it.“
The concern with Artificial Intelligence raised by the Pope is the emergence of lethal autonomous robots that are capable of deciding on matters about the taking of human life, and these robots should be freely developed without any input from human beings. In his live remarks, Francis said he wants to declare the machines as “weapons of destruction,” adding that “no machine should ever be given the authority of deciding whether or not a human being should die,” according to the AP.

In fact, this was not the first time Pope Francis was taking his concerns on the fast-growing AI in the public domain. In 2019, Before the release of ChatGPT, that hijacked the Artificial Intelligence space, Francis said that if Silicon Valley moguls do not watch out this contraption would reduce humanity to prehistoric brutishness up and running by the edict of the jungle.
The Vatican published a statement by the Pope in December, where in the context of discussing the liberal discourse on AI he said that everyone should speak about ‘ disruption’ and discuss the ‘ dual nature’ of this opportunity Last month, before the theme of this year’s World Day of AI, the Pope delivered the statement listing the ‘ serious threats’ of AI that should not remain silent, and at the same time, highlighting the ‘ exciting opportunities’ that it
In the year 2018, even Pope was on the receiving end and fell prey to an AI con. The previous year, there were fake videos of him wearing an all-white puffy coat done by AI deep fake and people only came to know that it was fake. However, the Pope has also accepted the positives of the development of Artificial Intelligence, for example in the enhancement of healthcare and the gradual fight against poverty.
