NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang Urges Nations to Prioritize Sovereign AI at Summit

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang addressed a global audience at the World Government Summit in Dubai, highlighting the significance of sovereign AI and urging every country to assert control over the production of its Artificial Intelligence. 

Sovereign AI entails a country’s control over its data and intelligence production, encapsulating its culture, common sense, and history. Huang’s discussion with His Excellency Omar Al Olama, the UAE’s Minister of AI, underscored this vision, emphasising the significance of owning data and mobilising computational resources.

Huang, who spoke as part of a fireside chat with the UAE’s Minister of AI, His Excellency Omar Al Olama, described sovereign AI, which emphasizes a country’s ownership over its data and the intelligence it produces, as an enormous opportunity for the world’s leaders.

“It codifies your culture, your society’s intelligence, your common sense, your history—you own your own data,” Huang told Al Olama during their conversation, a highlight of an event attended by more than 4,000 delegates from 150 countries.

“We completely subscribe to that vision,” Al Olama said. “That’s why the UAE is moving aggressively toward creating large language models and mobilizing compute.”

The UAE, in alignment with this perspective, is actively pursuing large language models and computational capabilities to bolster its AI endeavours. Huang’s visit to Dubai aligns with the nation’s aspirations to transition into a global information technology hub, showcasing the region’s commitment to AI-driven growth.

AI presents immense opportunities for the Middle East, with a projected $320 billion boost to the region’s economy by 2030, as indicated by PwC. Huang urged leaders to embrace AI, emphasising its adaptability to local languages and expertise. He advocated for infrastructure development, emphasising the accessibility and feasibility of AI integration.

NVIDIA GPUs have emerged as a pivotal platform for AI innovation, democratising access and catalysing advancements across various sectors. Huang shared his vision of creating computing technologies that eliminate the need for explicit programming, making everyone a programmer.

In a significant move underscoring the regional momentum behind AI, Moro Hub, a subsidiary of Digital DEWA, announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to build a green data centre. This partnership reflects the growing commitment to advancing AI capabilities in the region. 

The summit featured discussions on smart mobility, sustainable development, and AI advancements, highlighting the transformative potential of these technologies.

Huang’s advocacy for sovereign AI resonates with global leaders, emphasising the imperative for nations to own their intelligence production. His insights pave the way for a future where AI permeates every aspect of society, driving innovation and economic growth on a global scale.
