NIPRGPT: Air Force’s New Secure AI Assistant for Airmen and Guardians

Introducing NIPRGPT, the Air Force's secure AI assistant providing intelligent support tailored for Airmen and Guardians

The Department of the Air Force (DAF) unveiled a newer generative artificial intelligence (AI) on Monday; the Non-classified Internet Protocol Generative Pre-training Transformer or NIPRGPT. Hence, the utilization of NIPRGPT is aimed at enabling the DAF to understand how artificial intelligence can enhance access to information and identify whether generative AI is required in department.

NIPRGPT is an artificial-intelligent chatbot, with human-like replies, that will assist airmen and guardians with typewritten correspondences, research, coding projects, all while connected to a highly-secure online platform. Currently, the platform is still in the experimental phase; however, Chandra Donelson, the acting Chief Data & Artificial Intelligence Officer of DAF, said in the media roundtable on Monday that NIPRGPT possesses effective outcomes.

Venice Goodwine, DAF Chief Information Officer, said that “ Our recent GenAI Roundtables with industry and academia have shown us this is an actively growing field. Now is the time to give our Airmen and Guardians the flexibility to develop the necessary skills in parallel. There are multiple modernization efforts going on right now across the federal government and within the DAF to get tools in the hands of the workforce. This tool is another one of those efforts.” She added, “So first and foremost, I truly believe the greatest contributions and innovators can make is to create other innovators, and to see what guardians and airmen have done here with the NIPRGBT capability is phenomenal

The Air Force has not selected a certain vendor proposal or support model in constructing the criterion for NIPRGPT. Still, the line of thinking is to continue working with commerce partners after servicemembers start adapting the said platform so that the department may determine whether the DAF indeed requires generative AI.

NIPRGPT is based on the Dark Saber software prototype designed at the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate. Dark Saber is a project by Air Force / Spaceforce members, who’s task it is to develop new software and capabilities to be deployed in the field.

Therefore, the Department of the Air Force has made notable progress through the announcement of NIPRGPT as a sign of embracing artificial intelligence in its operation. It can greatly enhance the ease of numerous tasks for both airmen and guardians in providing them with secure information. While AI within the army is not exceptional to some criticism, NIPRGPT does not seek to cause controversies as it aims at advancing the access to information and increasing the effectiveness of the tasks.
