Morgan Freeman Calls Out AI Voice Misuse: A Call for Regulation

Morgan Freeman, the legendary Hollywood actor and Oscar winner, recently took to social media to thank his fans for alerting him to the unauthorized use of AI technology to imitate his iconic voice. Freeman’s gratitude underscores a growing concern about AI’s ability to replicate voices without consent, posing significant moral and legal challenges. This issue, which has also affected celebrities like Scarlett Johansson, highlights the urgent need for public awareness and stricter regulations to protect individuals’ identities and maintain authenticity in the digital age.

Morgan Freeman posted on his account “Thank you to my incredible fans for your vigilance and support in calling out the unauthorized use of an A.I. voice imitating me. Your dedication helps authenticity and integrity remain paramount. Grateful. #AI #scam #imitation #IdentityProtection

Talking about the events, media outlets have recently shared information about posts that a TikTok user, who said that she is Freeman’s niece, published, which contains the narration made by an AI clone of the actor. Freeman’s other voice-overs are also credited, offering the touching and impassive voice to the March of the Penguins and the Netflix series Life on Our Planet and being the voice of CBS News.

Freeman’s complaint is similar to that of actress Scarlett Johansson, who also demanded the company cease; she threatened legal action after OpenAI replicated her voice after it refused to obtain the license from her. Johansson added that she was shocked, angered and in disbelief when she heard her likeness, in the manner of her speaking, through the voice of a computer.

It is clearly a moral and legal issue that AI technology is mimicking celebrities’ voices for automated calls without their consent. Even though biosphere might be lawfully utilized for appropriate aims, for instance, producing individual voice-management assistants, the improper usage of celebrity’s voice may be viewed as an invasion of their rights for imitation and a threat to their prestige.

Need for Awareness and Regulation

In his recent post, Freeman addresses the situation by pointing out how the concept of AI-generated voices urgently requires public sensibilization and control measures. As for the current state of affairs, it can be expected that the trend towards higher use of such services by unauthorized persons will continue as the technology develops; thus, the problems must be solved both by the lawmakers and the industry.

Thus, it can be said that the unauthorized imitation of celebrities by using artificially generated voices is an issue that seems to be on the increase. One of the most recent cases is the televised comments of the famous actor Morgan Freeman, which proves the preventive effect of increasing awareness.
