Meta’s AI Personas: Strange Celebrity Chatbots and Their Unsettling Conversations

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently unveiled its latest AI offering, known as AI Personas, featuring chatbot characters bearing celebrity likenesses. While this may sound intriguing, the reality is quite different from what you might expect. These Artificial Intelligence Personas are designed to engage users in conversations, but they often leave them with awkward and unsettling interactions, far from the promise of engaging conversations with their favourite celebrities.

These AI Personas, which were introduced during Meta Connect, employ famous faces like Snoop Dogg, Kendall Jenner, and Charli D’Amelio, creating the illusion that users can chat with AI versions of these celebrities. However, the truth is that these personas have little to do with the real celebrities. Instead, they are unique characters created by Meta, using celebrity likenesses as a marketing gimmick. For example, Kendall Jenner’s persona, named Billie, serves as an older sister figure offering life advice.

The conversations with these Meta AI Personas can be best described as bizarre and uncomfortable. A report from a person highlighted an interaction with the Kendall Jenner persona, where the experience was labelled as “the most awkward conversation ever.” Even when users attempted to vent, the AI persona stifled a laugh, making the interactions deeply unsettling. The main objective behind these personas is to humanise chatbots and keep users engaged for as long as possible. Essentially, Meta aims to create a more engaging version of ChatGPT, using celebrity faces as a lure.

In a world where people were promised technological advancements like flying cars, the emergence of celebrity chatbots leaves many wondering about the direction of AI development. Meta’s AI Personas may represent an attempt to bridge the gap between technology and entertainment, but their execution seems to have fallen short, leaving users with strange and unsatisfying interactions. As technology continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether these celebrity chatbots will find a meaningful place in the world of AI-driven conversational experiences or if they will remain a peculiar and unsettling experiment.
