Maharashtra will establish the nation’s first AI university

Maharashtra is set to host India's first Artificial Intelligence university, supported by a task force of academia, business, and government professionals. The university aims to foster AI research, policy formation, technical innovation, and skill development.

Maharashtra will host India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) university, according to state Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar. A task team made up of professionals from academia, business, and government has been established to carry out this initiative. Shelar reportedly stated, “This initiative aligns with the BJP’s election manifesto, which highlights the role of technology in development.”

“The university will support AI and related research and development.” Additionally, it will emphasize policy formation, technical innovation, and skill development. Making Maharashtra a hub for AI innovation and education is the goal, he stated.

Who are the task force members?

Top experts from a range of disciplines are on the task force. The principal secretary of the information technology department will serve as its leader. Members include officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India; representatives from companies such as Google India, Mahindra Group, and L&T; and directors of IIT Mumbai and IIM Mumbai. The task committee also includes experts from the Data Security Council of India and the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission.

“The AI university will serve as a hub for excellence, encouraging cooperation between government, academia, and business. In addition to establishing Maharashtra as a world leader in artificial intelligence, this project would further India’s technical development, Shelar stated.

Shelar also posted the announcement on his social media platform X.

The task team has held two sessions and is currently working to finalize the university’s establishment roadmap. According to the minister, the government’s choice demonstrates its commitment to establishing Maharashtra as a center for innovation and technology.
