Jenna Ortega Condemns AI-Generated Graphic Imagery, Quits X Due to Disturbing Edited Photo

Jenna Ortega, the 21-year-old star of 'Wednesday,' has condemned the proliferation of AI-generated graphic imagery, revealing that she quit X (formerly Twitter) after receiving disturbing and edited photos of herself. In a recent interview, Ortega expressed her horror at the content and discussed the emotional impact of such images, highlighting the darker side of AI and social media.

Speaking out against the proliferation of graphic AI imagery is Jenna Ortega.

The 21-year-old “Wednesday” star disclosed in an interview with The New York Times‘ “The Interview” podcast that she departed from X, the former Twitter, following the receipt of automated-generated sexual images of herself.

“Did I like being 14 and making a Twitter account because I was supposed to and seeing dirty edited content of me as a child?” she said. “Not at all. It’s horrifying. It is tainted. It is incorrect. It is repulsive.”

The actress remarked that she deactivated her account because of the flood of “absurd images and photos” of herself following the premiere of the Netflix series “Wednesday” in 2022. She related this tale in response to a question about her feelings toward artificial intelligence.

It was just nasty and made me feel horrible, she continued. “It’s just so repulsive, and I was already in a confused state that I just deleted it because it was unnecessary and I didn’t need that,” she said. I felt uneasy about it. It’s terrible. Nevertheless, that’s the reason I removed it—I don’t need to see it every day, and I couldn’t say anything without seeing something like that.”

In addition, Ortega revealed to the Times that the “unsolicited photo of a man’s genitals” she opened as her first direct message at the age of 12 was “just the beginning of what was to come.” The actress is active on Instagram but no longer maintains an official account on X.

An extensive outcry was sparked earlier this year when a set of obscenely graphic AI photos of Taylor Swift appeared on X. Since several of the images went against X’s policies, they were removed.

Following appearances in the Disney Channel series “Stuck in the Middle” and motion pictures such as “Scream” and “The Fallout,” Ortega gained further notoriety after the release of “Wednesday,” which went on to become a huge hit for Netflix in 2022.

Her next role will be in the eagerly awaited Tim Burton sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which opens in theaters on September 6 and stars Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton.

During an interview with the “Interview” podcast, Ortega discussed the challenges of becoming well-known at such a young age.

“I’m so underdeveloped,” she admitted. Technically speaking, you know, my prefrontal cortex isn’t even fully developed yet. Or, perhaps the opposite would be more appropriate: I would want to be incredibly self-assured, try everything, take risks, and learn from my mistakes rather than fail miserably. Whether I like it or not, there are a lot more stakes now.”

In 2023, the “Scream VI” star discussed the negative aspects of social media in an interview that was included as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series.

“Social media, what it does to anyone our age, it’s such a comparing game,” she stated. It nearly encourages a bandwagon mentality. It is deceptive.”
