Samsung Electronics announced on October 17, 2024, the development of the industry’s first 24-gigabit (Gb) GDDR7 DRAM, which is seen as a significant step in semiconductor technology. With its outstanding graphic performance, It will increase the user experience in areas such as gaming, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance computing(HPC).

The GDDR7 DRAM has impressive specifications, key specifications include:

• Bandwidth of 1.5 terabytes-per-second which is 1.4 times higher than its predecessor GDDR6
• Uses Pulse Amplitude Modulation signalling technology which makes data  transmission at a speed of up to 40 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) and it can reach up to 42.5 Gbps
• Built using Samsung’s 5th-generation 10-nanometer (nm) class DRAM technology, which increases cell density by 50% without enlarging the package size.

Yongcheol Bae, Executive Vice President of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics, stated “Our GDDR7 DRAM will help elevate user experiences in areas that require outstanding graphics performance, such as workstations, PCs and game consoles, and is expected to expand into future applications such as AI, high-performance computing (HPC) and automotive vehicles.” 

The chip’s design utilises advanced power-saving technologies that enhance energy efficiency by more than 20% which makes it suitable for devices where power consumption is critical.
