Google Rolls Out Gemini Live AI Chatbot to All Android Users, Free for Everyone with Gemini App

Google has launched its voice AI chatbot Gemini Live for free to all Android users, marking a key move in the AI chatbot race. While OpenAI's similar voice feature remains limited, Android users can now access Gemini Live with natural, conversational interactions via the Gemini app.

All Android users may now access Google’s voice artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Gemini Live, for free.

The service is important, Ars Technica noted in a report Friday (Sept. 13), because rival OpenAI’s identical voice capability has yet to fully launch.

During the August Pixel 9 launch event, Google unveiled Gemini Live, which was initially exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers. The service is now available to everybody on Android who has the Gemini app or overlay installed.

According to the Ars Technica article, “OpenAI initially demonstrated its Advanced Voice Mode in May with the launch of GPT-4o, but it has only shipped the feature to a limited number of users starting in late July.” Some AI experts also speculate that a larger debut has been delayed due to computational limitations.

In a blog post last month, Sissie Hsiao, vice president and general manager of Gemini Experiences and Google Assistant, described Gemini Live as a mobile conversational experience that allows users to have natural, organic interactions with Gemini.

Hsiao also mentioned that customers can ask for more information at any point in the conversation, pause it and return to it later, and carry on a background chat with the AI assistant even when their phone is locked.

In the coming weeks, Google also intends to develop extensions for Keep, Tasks, Utilities, Calendar, and additional capabilities on YouTube Music in addition to integrating Gemini with more Google tools and apps.

It was noted that “users can access Gemini at any time, no matter what else they’re doing on their phone because it is fully integrated into Android. It can also interact with apps like Gmail and Google Messages and read the screen.”

The announcement coincides with a period in which tech titans are rushing to create complex, multilingual AI chatbots for cross-border eCommerce, as reported earlier this month. This might revolutionize how companies interact with clients around the world.

Google recently extended Gemini AI’s reach beyond India, demonstrating the industry’s focus on multilingualism and positioning Google as one of several businesses attempting to provide multilingual chatbots.
