Google I/O 2025 on May 20: What to Anticipate from Android to Gemini

Google I/O, a developer conference in Mountain View, California, will showcase artificial intelligence, Android, and other technologies. The event will unveil Android 16, Gemini AI's latest features, and the upcoming major updates in 2025. It will also showcase Android XR and upcoming Pixel models.

Google has revealed that Mountain View, California, will host Google I/O, its yearly developer conference, from May 20 to 21. After a keynote talk, workshops and exhibits will highlight developments in artificial intelligence, the Android platform, and other technologies. Additionally, the business has stated that live streaming of live events would be available on the official Google I/O website.

The next version of Google’s mobile operating system, Android 16, which just went into beta testing, is anticipated to be unveiled during this year’s conference. The business will also highlight Gemini AI’s latest features and how it integrates with other Google services.

What to anticipate from Google I/O 2025?

Android 16

The Android 16 release timetable, as provided by Google, suggests that the operating system may finish testing before Google I/O. During or soon after the event, the company might make Android 16 available to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Following Google’s pledge to issue Android updates more often, two are scheduled for 2025: a minor update in Q4 and a big release in Q2 (Android 16).

Numerous new features for Android handsets have been unveiled, and the operating system is currently in beta testing. Improvements like screen-off fingerprint access, notification cooldown, adaptive app sizes based on screen dimensions, live update notifications, audio sharing for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) devices, and more will be included in Android 16.

Android XR

Last year, Google, in partnership with Qualcomm, unveiled its first extended reality (XR) platform for glasses and headsets. Samsung has acknowledged that it is working on a headset that would use the Android XR platform, but more information is anticipated before the operating system is fully operational.

The platform’s deep integration of the Gemini AI assistant for system navigation, pass-through graphics for navigating between virtual and real-world surroundings, and support for 3D content viewing are some of its key features that have already been made public.

Gemini AI

Google debuted agentic AI experiences with Gemini at last year’s Google I/O, such as “Project Astra,” an interface that allows users to have genuine conversations with the chatbot using real-world images. During the debut of the Samsung Galaxy S25 series last month, Google announced that Project Astra-based experiences would soon start to roll out. This year’s developer conference may offer a sneak peek at the finished UI as well as new agentic features for Gemini AI.

Hardware

At the event, Google might give attendees a preview of the upcoming Pixel models. Manufacturers like Samsung may also reveal new devices based on Google’s Android XR platform.
