Google to rename AI chatbot Bard to Gemini

The Google Bard AI chatbot is to be renamed Gemini. The Google Bard language model was launched in February last year as a counterweight to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

This move is part of Google’s broader strategy to integrate its LLM model, Gemini across its product ecosystem, potentially signaling significant enhancements and expansions.

A leaked changelog, shared by developer Dylan Roussel, reveals that the name change is expected to roll out on February 7. Alongside the rebranding, Google may introduce a paid ‘Advanced’ tier powered by Gemini Ultra, offering enhanced multi-modal capabilities, improved coding support, and deeper file analysis features. Additionally, Gemini is set to expand its availability to include Canada, marking its first foray into the country.

Gemini, Google’s LLM model, launched last year with three versions: Nano, Pro, and Ultra. Capable of performing diverse tasks like logical reasoning, coding, and creative collaboration, it seems poised for a significant role in the company’s AI landscape. With the rebranding to Gemini, Google aims to consolidate its AI offerings under a unified brand, potentially streamlining the user experience and accessibility.

Google added a new changelog for Bard, and — oh boy — it's a big one!

The availability in Canada is awesome! That said I don't really understand the limitations with the app. That's disappointing as someone who lives in Europe.

Furthermore, Google plans to launch a dedicated Gemini app for smartphone users, enabling them to leverage Google AI for various tasks like learning, writing, and planning. The app will integrate with Google services such as Gmail, Maps, and YouTube, enhancing its utility and functionality. While Android users will receive a standalone Gemini app, iOS users may access it through the Google app.

Gemini’s expansion includes support for additional languages such as Japanese, Korean, and English in most parts of the world, excluding certain European countries and regions. Despite the leaked information, Google has yet to confirm these developments, but anticipation is high for potential announcements in the coming week.
