Global AI Conclave: India’s AI Ecosystem at Inflection Point says Union Minister and Industry Leaders

Prominent figures from tech and policy circles gathered at the Global AI Conclave, shedding light on India's AI trajectory, from potential as an AI powerhouse to considerations in various sectors.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, underscores India’s critical juncture in the AI ecosystem. Speaking at the Global AI Conclave, Chandrasekhar highlighted India’s pivotal position, referring to the country as being at an “inflection point” in the AI ecosystem. Contrary to the massive resources required for previous initiatives, he believes that AI’s success in India does not demand a comparable scale.

Chandrasekhar dismisses the need for a performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, similar to the one applied to semiconductor manufacturing missions, stating that artificial intelligence(AI) in India requires fewer resources. He outlines the government’s clear ambition for India to play a leading role in the global AI landscape, emphasising the formula for success in the country’s innovation ecosystem.

Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, receives acclaim from Priyank Kharge, the state’s IT minister, who envisions the city becoming the world’s AI capital. From transitioning from a global call centre hub to a disruptive force in global innovation, Bengaluru aims to secure a prominent position in the global innovation index.

Insights from industry experts delved into the nuances of AI’s various dimensions. Chris Miller, author of ‘Chip Wars,’ highlighted the employment potential in chip packaging, while Yotta Infrastructure’s CEO, Sunil Gupta, announces the launch of Shakti Cloud, positioning it to compete with industry leaders like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, marking a significant step in India’s cloud service offerings.

Google’s Pandu Nayak highlights India’s unique search needs, influencing Google’s strategic outlook, while Ashok Jhunjhunwala, an IIT-Madras professor, stresses the need for AI solutions to address unemployment and rural poverty in India.

Mary Snapp from Microsoft advocated for responsible AI practices, focusing on transparency and user awareness. Andrew Ng highlighted the US’s lead in AI while acknowledging India’s potential in ‘Gen AI’ and emphasizing the importance of AI applications beyond technical infrastructure.

Sridhar Vembu, CEO of Zoho, emphasised the significance of brain capital, stating that solving brain capital challenges will attract financial capital. Andrew Feldman, CEO of Cerebras Systems, discusses efforts to improve India’s AI computing infrastructure and the long journey ahead for quantum tech in production work.

Manu Chopra, CEO of Karya.ai, likens AI’s impact to the transformative effect of the internet, stressing the need to ensure equitable access. Dilip Jose, CEO of Manipal Health Enterprises, urges caution in deploying AI in healthcare, emphasising the need to remove business angles from its application.

The Global AI Conclave provides a comprehensive overview of India’s AI landscape, showcasing diverse perspectives and initiatives shaping the future of AI in the country and beyond.
