Get Ready for the Rise of AI Phones: What Can You Expect?

There was a time when 5G and 6G wireless technology in phones were believed to be the pinnacle of innovation. However, the future of smartphones will now be shaped by AI.

It is 2024, and the world of smartphones is on the brink of a major transformation. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is poised to become a game-changer in the way we interact with our mobile devices.

There was a time when 5G and 6G wireless technology were believed to be the pinnacle of innovation. However, the future of smartphones will now be shaped by AI. We are now ushering in an era where the same old apps and interfaces we have grown accustomed to will give way to a new era of personalized, intelligent, and seamless experiences.

Imagine predictive text and voice assistants that understand us better than ever before, or cameras that can identify objects and scenes in real time. Smartphones are now evolving as multipurpose tools instead of entertainment gadgets.

Smartphone Companies and the latest AI Models

Samsung

On January 17 at 1 p.m. EST, Samsung, the largest Android smartphone brand in the world, is hosting a launch event, the Galaxy Unpacked 2024, for its latest flagship smartphone development, the Galaxy S24 series. The main attraction of the latest series is, unsurprisingly, AI. The company is set to launch its own generative AI model, called Galaxy AI. It is believed to be launched alongside the new S series. With this comes the question: Is the smartphone market on the verge of a big revolution?

Last year, we saw a significant change in the market with the introduction of foldable smartphones. Flip-and-fold phones are not entirely new concepts; they were quite popular in the 90s. However, the concept of folding a glass screen and having a seamless display proved to be a breakthrough. At first, it was Samsung that sat upon the metaphorical peak of flip and fold phones with their Galaxy Flip series and the Z Fold series. However, now almost every big Android brand has come up with foldable phones, including Google, Motorola, and OnePlus.

Google

In October 2023, Google released the world’s first smartphone with built-in AI, the Pixel 8. Powered by Gemini Nano and utilizing Bard, the search engine giant’s rival to ChatGPT, Pixel 8 had a plethora of new features, such as Magic Editor and Best Take in Google Photos, AI-powered call screening, and live translation of over 49 languages.

In December, Pixel introduced two new updates to the software: Video Transcript Summarizer and Night Sight for videos. Its latest phones will come with greater capabilities. Reportedly, they can create original wallpaper from scratch based on specific themes. Bard will be able to summarize crucial points of email exchanges and write social media captions for posts.

Qualcomm

Qualcomm, the third-largest semiconductor and phone chip manufacturer in the world, is also building its new mobile CPU around generative AI. The newest flagship phones from Xiamoi—the 14 and 14 Pro—are set to be the first users of the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU.

Apart from this, we can also expect to see more smartphones equipped with Qualcomm’s latest AI-powered processor.  The company released a short video demonstrating the potential of generative AI on smartphones with a vision of a virtual assistant that listens to phone conversations and distills the key points into concise bullet points. This capability showcases how AI can help us save time and stay organized by automating summarizing and note-taking.

Moreover, the new Snapdragon chip will enable smartphone users to zoom in on photos taken with their phone and generate details that were not originally captured, mimicking the effect of an ultrawide lens. Going beyond traditional photo-editing tools, this feature will enable us to create brand-new images that transcend the limitations of the initial shot. This capability is made possible by AI algorithms that can analyze the content of the image and generate realistic details to fill in the gaps.

This new technology can potentially revolutionize how we use our smartphones to capture and process images. With the ability to generate details beyond the original shot, we can enhance their photos in ways that were previously impossible. It will also help in saving time and increasing productivity.

At the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit in October 2023, CEO and President Cristiano Amon took the stage to declare that artificial intelligence (AI) technology is altering our perspective on our gadgets, operating systems, and applications, as well as how we define a user experience. We can see it roll out this year.

Apple

Apple released its latest smartphone, the iPhone 15, in September 2023, which has better specs than its predecessor, the iPhone 14. It is expected that Apple too will infuse artificial intelligence into its smartphones with the next iPhone update, which is expected to arrive in September 2024. We will have to wait to find out how impressive the integration will be.

According to IDC (International Data Center), in 2022, “worldwide smartphone shipments declined 18.3%,” marking the largest-ever decline in the smartphone market since 2013. Because of the increasing instability of the economic market, people all over the world are now thinking twice before buying a new phone to replace their old one.

It is not a need but a want for smartphone brands to come up with more innovative smartphones with impressive features. Samsung’s S24 series seems to be a promising step towards this innovation.

AI is increasingly becoming a part of our daily lives, and in the coming years, it will be completely integrated into smartphones and turn them into intelligent companions.
