A beta version of CRED’s e-rupee (e₹) wallet was released, making it the first fintech to incorporate the digital currency of the RBI.
Yes Bank will be the first sponsor bank to allow a third-party application provider, such as CRED, to issue CBDCs.
In its monetary policy document published in April 2024, the RBI suggested allowing non-bank payment system operators to provide CBDC wallets to make CBDC-Retail available to a larger user base over time. In addition to testing the CBDC platform’s resilience to manage multi-channel transactions, the RBI stated that this is anticipated to improve access and increase the options accessible to consumers.

Fintech companies like PhonePe, AmazonPay, Google Pay, Mobikwik, and CRED sought to participate in the Indian central bank’s digital currency pilot after the announcement by providing transactions through the eRupee and collaborating with RBI on pilots.
With a daily transaction limit of ₹50,000 and a storage capacity of up to ₹1 lakh, CRED’s e-rupee wallet allows transactions up to ₹10,000 per transfer. There will be no fees associated with these merchant transactions.
All CRED members will have access to programmable merchant payments, CRED Pay integration, and PIN-less transactions under ₹500 in the upcoming months.
“The e₹ wallet is a milestone in India’s financial evolution,” stated Kunal Shah, founder of CRED. In the fastest-growing economy in the world, we’re allowing the creditworthy to influence the direction of digital currency with the RBI’s help. We aim to facilitate e-commerce and encourage the most creditworthy Indians to use it.
All CRED members who have been whitelisted for this can now send and receive money to other CBDC wallets and make payments using UPI-linked bank accounts thanks to the release of the beta version of the e-rupee wallet. After completing video KYC, individuals can utilize UPI to establish and load their e-rupee wallets.
