AI For Neurosurgeons

China’s latest venture into medical innovation has sparked intrigue. In a step towards AI-powered medicine, China is testing a first-of-its-kind intelligent assistant for brain surgeons. This pioneering technology promises to revolutionize surgical consultations and procedures, offering real-time assistance and expertise to medical professionals.

China aims to enhance the precision and efficacy of neurosurgical practices, marking a significant leap forward in healthcare advancement.

Why is China again in the news?

China has again managed to be in the news. This time, it is because of a Hong Kong-based agency under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The country’s foremost state-backed scientific institute has begun testing an AI assistant for neurosurgeons at seven hospitals in Beijing and other cities in coming months, one of many initiatives the government is backing to try and harness the technology.

On Monday, the scientific institution introduced an AI model based on Meta Platforms Inc.’s Llama 2.0. Researchers trained and fine-tuned the model with papers, medical journals, and manuals to act as a surgery consultant of sorts for doctors, said Liu Hongbin, the centre’s executive director.

How does this medical trial work?

According to researchers, “about 100 graphics processing units were evenly divided between Huawei Technologies Co.’s Ascend 910B and Nvidia Corp.’s high-end A100 chips. These chips were later used by the Hong Kong-based Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics to train its healthcare-focused model.”

With the help of citations drawn from more than a million academic records, they anticipate the AI bot known as CARES Copilot 1.0 will respond to queries. They added that it ought to be able to handle text, audio, and picture data in addition to diagnostic data from CT, MRI, and ultrasound scans. Also, the researchers envision AI taking a more active role in warning doctors against pursuing risky procedures, for instance.

The chief physician of the neurosurgery department at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which participated in the development of the model, Feng Ming, stated that “there are obstacles, including restricted computing power due to the banned access to Nvidia’s advanced chips.”

We can, however, create a vertical model with our features and better mainland hospital data, which OpenAI and many domestic private businesses are unable to access.

Similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, state agencies are collaborating with private Chinese companies to develop in-house artificial intelligence. The first set of services approved for public release in August included the TaiChu model of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is believed that the technology can completely transform a variety of industries, including personal consultations and diagnostics.
