Artificial Intelligence Revolutionizes Indian Sports: IIT Madras Leads the Way

Indian sports are undergoing a revolutionary change as AI gets integrated into the sports industry by IIT Madras. A wide range of AI-powered tools are being introduced to the sports industry that can help analyse the data and, in turn, help the teams and athletes perform more efficiently.

This phenomenal integration of AI to be part of the sport was introduced by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), even though they are out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024.

The team analysed the bowling of the opponent using data analysis techniques and found a pattern that helped the side reach the knockout stage of the tournament.

ESPNCricinfo has also stated that based on the Sports Analytics Algorithm, they can measure the impact that the player has on the game and termed it “ Player Impact Score,” all with the help of IIT Madras.

“Our plan is to support around 30 sports tech startups every year. Over five years, we will groom nearly 200 such sports tech startups with the support of IIT Madras in the domain areas of computer vision, data analytics, AI, ML, and biomechanics,” – Ramesh Kumar, CEO of CESSA, and former Global Head of ESPNCricinfo. He also added “ “We are planning to do some courses within IIT Madras in the education and training space. We are looking at supporting players in this space, which essentially leverages IoT, deep tech, and ML,”

Dean of Global Engagement, IIT Madras, Raghunathan Rengaswamy, said, “The advantage is that our predictive data is updated after every ball based on the performance of each player. The algorithm we developed at IIT Madras is a unique AI engine that leverages the rich data collected historically in cricket and the extensive models developed. It shows an interesting analysis of the performance often missed by fans and cricket observers. It was developed by scientific methods, processes, and complex algorithms based on machine learning,”

AI and Other Sports:

Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA) revealed that they are trying to integrate AI in Boxing as well. There are multiple cameras set up and monitored, and then, with the help of AI, the athletes can understand opponents’ fighting styles so that they can be used tactically in a match.

Even in the Indian Super League (ISL), FC Goa has been using the help of AI to analyse the opponent teams’ performance and how they can strategically play in order to win.
