Apple’s secret ‘Project ACDC’ aims to develop AI chips for data centres

Apple is investing "significantly" in generative AI, according to CEO Tim Cook of the company. As it releases many new features, Apple, like Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and everyone else on this side of Nvidia, is reportedly working on bespoke server hardware to support AI models.

Apple is pushing forward with “Project ACDC,” a covert project that has just come to light that builds proprietary AI chips for data centers, amid a high-stakes AI race.

Apple is creating Apple Silicon, dubbed “Project ACDC,” especially for server farms devoted to artificial intelligence processing. For further iterations of its platforms, the corporation wants to optimize AI applications inside its data centres.

When it comes to creating custom semiconductors for its products, such as the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac desktops, Apple has been a pioneer in this area. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company’s expertise is naturally extended toward the creation of AI chips tailored to specific servers.

The business has made suggestions that its next Worldwide Developer Conference in June will feature the release of new AI innovations and products. For instance, stronger content-blocking capabilities, a redesigned user interface, and a novel AI-powered function known as Intelligent Search might all be included in the upcoming version of Safari.

There will be a similar update for Siri, according to sources, since Apple wants to improve the app’s connection with Messages. Apple’s AI may create summaries of communication content in future iterations of its operating systems.

The need to create these AI skills has become more pressing due to the efforts of competitors such as Microsoft and Meta. After OpenAI’s ChatGPT gained public traction, these businesses quickly shifted their focus to generative AI.

Thanks to its early and tight collaboration with OpenAI, Microsoft in particular has benefited and is now worth more than Apple.

Investors in Apple are becoming more irritated, believing the company is falling behind its rivals in artificial intelligence innovation. But it’s important to consider how Apple’s AI developments might affect the company’s market value.

Apple’s action is a response to the growing importance of AI technology in business plans for a range of sectors. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more important in business, with businesses such as Amazon, Google, and others putting more emphasis on the technology. Its applications range from cloud computing to consumer electronics.

On the other hand, recent disclosures made by the Chinese social media user “Phone Chip Expert” on Weibo indicate that Apple may be actively developing a specialized AI processor. The source states that this AI chip will go into mass production in the second half of 2025.

Apple uses hardware ownership and operation as part of its strategy to set itself apart from competitors that might rely on cloud-based services and to provide better security and design freedom.
