Apple Acquired DarwinAI

Apple Inc. has acquired the Canadian AI startup DarwinAI. This strategic move by Apple will help in developing its generative AI capabilities as compared to other market leaders like Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT, Microsoft CoPilot, and others.

According to the reports, Apple quietly purchased the Artificial Intelligence startup DarwinAI earlier this year. Apple has decided to introduce a suite of new features in the upcoming iOS 18 update. DarwinAI is renowned for its innovative approach to creating compact and efficient AI systems, which is a critical advantage for running sophisticated AI on portable devices.

Apple’s generative AI comes as the global tech giant seeks to compete with industry leaders like Google and Microsoft. The integration of DarwinAI’s technology will enhance Apple’s AI offerings, particularly in on-device operations, aligning with the company’s commitment to user privacy.

The acquisition has led to the transfer of DarwinAI’s talent to Apple’s AI division, including AI researcher Alexander Wong, who now serves as a director. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, has hinted at groundbreaking developments in AI for 2024, promising transformative opportunities for users.

With the Apple acquisition of Darwin AI, it is anticipated that the announcement will be made at the Worldwide Developers Conference. It is also expected that Apple is poised to make significant strides in AI innovation with the launch of new AI-integrated features in its various products, like software and services, devices, hardware, and operating systems.

Why Apple Acquired Darwin AI:

  • Apple’s Acquisition: Apple has acquired the Canadian AI start-up DarwinAI to enhance its generative AI capabilities.
  • DarwinAI’s Expertise: DarwinAI specializes in creating smaller and faster AI systems, which is beneficial for running AI on devices.
  • Generative AI Push: Apple plans to introduce new features in iOS 18 that utilize generative AI, with an announcement expected at the worldwide developers conference.
  • Market Position: Despite numerous AI acquisitions, Apple is playing catch-up in the generative AI market, particularly after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who helped build DarwinAI’s business, has joined Apple as a director in its AI group as part of the deal.
