Alibaba unveils open-source AI models from its Qwen 2.5 family, emphasizing advanced capabilities like coding and multilingual support. The company also introduces text-to-video technology as it intensifies its focus on generative AI, competing with global tech giants.
To compete in the rapidly expanding field of generative AI, Chinese technology company Alibaba published new open-source AI models and text-to-video technologies on Thursday.
More than a hundred open-source models are derived from Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 family, which is its most recent major language model that was released in May.
Similar to their American counterparts, Chinese technology companies have been making significant investments in generative AI, with businesses vying to create diverse and strong product portfolios.

Alibaba has chosen a hybrid paradigm, investing in both proprietary and open-source development to expand its AI product line, while competitors like Baidu and OpenAI have mostly taken closed-source techniques.
Alibaba released a statement stating that its new models offer expertise in mathematics, coding, and support for over 29 languages. The models’ sizes range from 0.5 to 72 billion parameters, which are the variables that affect an AI model’s capabilities and performance.
The models are intended for use in a broad range of AI applications in the automotive, gaming, and scientific research industries.
Along with a rising number of other Chinese IT companies venturing into this developing sector, Alibaba also announced a new text-to-video model on Thursday as part of its Tongyi Wanxiang picture generation family.
Alibaba now faces direct competition from major international firms like OpenAI, which has expressed interest in text-to-video technologies.
