The advancements made to AI have been embraced as well as feared for several reasons; AI holds the potential to revolutionize numerous spheres of human activity, while at the same time, it can present serious risks. However, amidst the debate, one popular communication platform is embracing AI to offer a tantalizing solution: working five days a week, less workload per day, reduced stress, and more leisure time.
Zoom, a video conferencing service that takes pride in having a massive user base during the coronavirus period, has interesting news regarding the AI era. In more recent statements in an interview, the company’s chief executive officer, Eric Yuan, disclosed that Zoom is planning on creating artificial intelligence avatars that may lead to millions of individuals working under five days a week.
So, how exactly can AI help us achieve a coveted four-day workweek? Yuan explained that employees often find themselves juggling numerous meetings throughout the day, some of which may not be entirely necessary. By introducing AI avatars to attend and participate in these meetings on behalf of the employees, they can focus on more productive and essential tasks.
This concept might seem far-fetched, but Zoom is determined to make it a reality. The company aims to leverage its existing suite of tools, including phone, chat, and messaging services, and integrate them with AI capabilities to create a seamless and efficient work experience.
It may sound strange that AI avatars have become our representatives during meetings, but there may be a lot of upside to it. Less work entailed might mean that patients spend more time with their families; they might be healthier, happier with their jobs, and therefore more productive in their work. Also, companies could benefit from improving morale and productivity as a result of such changes.

However, the use of automation systems like AI avatars in the workplace brings about some questions and concerns. For example, how will these avatars depict the employees’ perceptions and ideas in the best way possible? Are they really capable of adapting to different meeting conditions and keeping the conversation natural and flowing? And, perhaps most importantly, which future trends will be affected by this technology, and, specifically, how will it affect employment rates?
In light of this, it is gratifying to join the debate about embracing a new innovative working culture—the four-day working week. From the point of view of realizing the goal, Zoom’s plan to introduce AI-powered avatars is progressive and ambitious, as it can promote business and connection; Nevertheless, it is necessary to seriously analyze and evaluate the obstacles and further consequences associated with this.
The idea of part-time work also calls into question several concerns and issues, and it is undeniable that part-time work saves working hours and allows to improve the quality of those same working hours. As we move into a world of new developments in the form of AI, we need to be enlightened as well as cautious regarding these developments since they are meant to empower and improve the lives of the people in our society.
