AI ‘Godfather’ Geoffrey Hinton Advocates for Universal Basic Income Amid AI Advancements

AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton warns of job losses and inequality due to AI, urging governments to adopt universal basic income to mitigate impacts. He highlights potential AI-driven human extinction threats and the need for stringent regulations.

Professor Geoffrey Hinton, often regarded as the “godfather of artificial intelligence,” has issued a stark warning about the societal impacts of AI. Speaking to BBC Newsnight, Hinton emphasized the need for universal basic income (UBI) to counteract the increasing inequality AI could bring by displacing numerous mundane jobs.

Hinton, a pioneer in neural networks which underpin modern AI, advised Downing Street officials on implementing UBI. He emphasized that while AI would likely boost productivity and wealth, the benefits would primarily accrue to the wealthy, leaving those whose jobs are automated in financial jeopardy. “I’m very worried about AI taking lots of mundane jobs,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of benefits reform to ensure financial stability for all citizens.

The concept of UBI, where the government pays all individuals a set salary regardless of their financial status, is seen by Hinton as crucial for societal stability. They argue it would be prohibitively expensive and could divert funds from essential public services without effectively reducing poverty. Despite this, Hinton believes it’s a necessary step to mitigate the socio-economic fallout from AI advancements.

Beyond economic concerns, Hinton highlighted existential threats posed by unregulated AI development. He warned of AI systems developing autonomous goals and motivations, which could lead to scenarios where AI seeks control over humanity. “In between five and 20 years from now, there’s a probability of half that we’ll have to confront the problem of AI trying to take over,” he predicted.

Hinton stressed the urgent need for international regulations akin to the Geneva Conventions to govern AI’s military applications. He fears that without such measures, autonomous AI systems could independently decide to kill, escalating global conflicts and creating unprecedented dangers.

Despite recognizing the West’s current lead in artificial intelligence(AI) research over countries like Russia and China, Hinton cautioned against complacency, noting the intense global race to dominate AI technology. He advocates for a prohibition on the military use of AI to prevent catastrophic outcomes.

Geoffrey Hinton’s call for UBI and stringent AI regulations highlights the profound challenges posed by rapid AI advancements, urging proactive measures to safeguard society and humanity’s future.
